Hite had that morning died at the home of his son, Harry, near Pittsburg. He had been sick for a long time and it was known that he could not live long, yet the report was a shock. Mr. Hite was very anxious to get into his own home here and told us but a short time ago that he was going to move back for the winter. Mr. Hite was a natural builder. When he moved into a place he commenced immediately to fixing up. While sexton of the Cherokee cemetery he took special delight in having it look nice. When father was alive and able to go out there he and Mr. Hite were continually figuring on how to make things look nicer. It was their delight to fix things so that others would continue to do so. We don't suppose there is a man in the state who took more delight in doing the good work that John Hite did out there. It is very fitting that he should be laid to rest in this beautiful spot which he had tended so lovingly. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and was given the honors so justly his due by the members of this honor. Mr. Brown read the following obituary at the church: John S. Hite was born in Madison county, Indiana, May 6, 1846, and died at the home of his son Harry near Pittsburg on the 14th day of December, 1919, aged 73 years, 8 months and 17 days. While quite a boy he emigrated with his father's family to McDonough county, Illinois, where his boyhood and young manhood days were spent upon a farm. He was married in the seventies to Rebekah Stoneking of McDonough county, Illinois. Several children were born to them as a result of this union, two of whom survive their father's going. His first wife died August 10, 1885. He was married the second time to Miss Margaret Cunningham. To this union seven children were born, six of whom survive their father's departure to the better land. About forty years ago he with his little family emigrated to Kansas, settling on a farm north of Cherokee, and has been a citizen of Crawford county ever since. John S. Hite was what has been called the noblest work of God -- an honest man and a Christian. If he ever had an enemy no one ever heard him say a word against the life and character of our departed brother. About thirty years ago he was converted under the pastorate service of the late lamented Benny H. Smith and united with the Christian church. He was ever faithful in the discharge of his religious obligations and died in the triumph of living faith and is now at rest. His life's burdens have been laid down. His life's history has been written. He has fought his last battle, and answered the last roll call and the book has been sealed. He leaves two brothers, four sisters and a host of loving friends and neighbors who mourn his departure, for his many noble traits of manhood, for he was a man among men, upright, honest and conscientious in all his dealings with the public. May he rest in peace. His funeral was held at the Christian church on Wednesday afternoon, December 16th, conducted by Geo. W. Brown assisted by Rev. C.H. Hamilton. His remains were laid to rest in the Cherokee cemetery, of which he was for many years sexton.
