Jasper Sparks Passes Onward After a lingering illness covering a period of three years, the greater part of which time he was confined to his home and his bed, Jasper Sparks passed to his reward on Wednesday, July 22, 1931, complications incident to old age being the direct cause of his death. Jasper Sparks was born in Indiana on March 25, 1847, and when he died at his home in this city last Wednesday he had reached the age of 84 years, three months and 27 days and thus a long, active life was brought to a close. Mr. Sparks resided in his home community for a number of years, coming westward at an early year from Indiana, settling in Tama county, Iowa, where he resided for a number of years, being engaged in farming. In 1873 he came to Howard County, taking a homestead, northwest of this city, where the Sparks family resided for five years. Then they moved to this city and they have resided here ever since. On April 17, 1875 Jasper Sparks and Miss Margaret E. Gregory were joined in the holy bonds of marriage and they have carried on during all these years, rearing a fine family of ten children, five of whom are left to mourn his death at this time. The following survive the death of the father and husband: Mrs. Jasper Sparks, the lonely widow, who will miss him most of all; Herman S. Sparks, Upland, Calif.; Leonard Sparks, Ogallala; Ray Sparks, Mountain View, Missouri; Mrs. Effie D. Snow, Oakland, Iowa; George N. Sparks, Culver Sparks, California. Those who preceded him in death are Mrs. Frank Moses, Amanda, Mary, Lucinda and Alura. There are fifteen grandchildren, one brother in Burbank, Calif., and one sister in Oakland, Oklahoma, also left to mourn his death. Coming as he did in the early days of Howard County, when the settlements were few and far between, he endured those trials incident to pioneer life. With little to do with, it took a strong heart and hard work to rear a large family in those days, and Mr. Sparks did his part in fine shape to assist in developing this county and make it a better place in which to live. After moving to St. Paul he operated a dray line for a great many years, finally retiring from that work to take up painting and he followed that vocation until age crept upon him and he did not feel like climbing on ladders and scaffolding. But he always found some kind of work that he could do that he might make a little money that was necessary to pay household expenses. That Mr. and Mrs. Sparks enjoyed a long married life was attested ton in April 1925, when they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, something that few people get a chance to do. Mr. Sparks was a fair minded man in his business affairs and he always took an interest in public affairs of the community and when he was able he delighted in being in his place in the house of God, where he went to worship when the going was tedious and painful for him. Four points were stressed by his pastor when the funeral was held last Friday. His long life, which was well spent; a pioneer of this county, where he did good work in its upbuilding; the father of a large family of children; and last and best of all, a Christian gentleman who had done well in the service of God in this country. Following the conclusion of the services at the Presbyterian church, which were in charge of the pastor, Rev. W. J. Primrose, the remains were conveyed to Elmwood cemetery where they were laid to rest, many friends and neighbors being present to pay their last respects to his memory. The Phonograph desires to tender sympathy and condolence to the bereaved wife and children in their bereavement. Especially does the sympathy of the entire community go to the bereaved old lady who has been a life-long companion of the deceased, or for the past fifty-six years. She will miss him greatly.
