Paul Henschen officiating. Burial will follow at the Ellendale City Cemetery. Jay died February 12, 2014 at his home in Ellendale. Jay Monroe Kendall was born to Jay Sr. and Emma Aleda (Paulson) Kendall on August 1, 1931 in Winship, SD. Jay's twin brother, James, passed away at birth. Jay attended rural schools in Winship and Ellendale. In 1952, he and his father purchased the Standard Oil Station in Ellendale which Jay ran for 16 years. In 1955, he married Patricia Hauser, a native of Guelph, North Dakota. He sold the Standard Oil Station in 1968 and opened his namesake furniture store, Jay's Hi-Way Furniture. In 1990, Jay and Patricia's son, Douglas, took ownership of the furniture store. Jay continued to help at the furniture store until he was unable to due to health problems. Jay loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. Most days you could find him having morning coffee with friends at the Fireside or having an afternoon snack at the Bakery. He and Patricia enjoyed traveling to many places while owning the furniture store including Jamaica, Spain, and Bermuda. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and golfing. Jay's hobbies took him hunting in Canada and fishing in Alaska. In later years, he enjoyed farming with his son Doug. Jay was also a member of the Presbyterian United Methodist Church in Ellendale. Survivors include his wife, Patricia; sons, Craig and Douglas; three grandchildren; brothers, Floyd and Roger; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters: Ethel, Eleanor, Faye, Evelyn, and Frances, and brothers James and Edwin. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ellendale
