Chase, Parker's enterprising hardware merchant, is a native of East Chester, NH, and was born Jul. 24, 1838. He is a son of Josiah and Adeline (Ayer) Chase. Chase, Parker's enterprising hardware merchant, is a native of East Chester, NH, and was born Jul. 24, 1838. He is a son of Josiah and Adeline (Ayer) Chase. Josiah is a native of New Hampshire, whose father, Perley Chase, was a direct descendant of the early Puritans and a participant in the Revolutionary War. Josiah Chase was a merchant and farmer at East Chester, where he died at the age of 48 years. Adeline Ayer was a native of Haverhill, MA, born Jan. 8, 1801, where she was reared and grew to maturity. Her father was of Scotch-Irish descent. Josiah and Adeline were married at Haverhill, MA, and lived there until Josiah's death. Adeline lived to be 81 years old. They were the parents of four children, Louisa J., deceased; Frances H, deceased; George S, in Mechanic Falls, ME and J. W. J. W. Chase was the youngest of the family and passed his boyhood days in his native town. He attended the common schools and later entered the Chester Academy to complete his education. In 1864 he went to Haverhill, MA, and engaged in the leather business which he carried for three years. During his residence there he was married Apr. 30, 1866 to Miss Mary F. Silloway, a native of Kingston, NH, born Jan. 15, 1849, she being a daughter of Wadley and Mariah (Hoyt) Silloway. One year after their marriage they removed to Minnesota, where they engaged in farming in Mower County. They remained there for twelve years and later on Mr. Chase secured a position with the C. M. & St. P. Railroad Company's surveying and construction parties working through South Dakota and central Iowa. He worked for the railroad company about four years and a half years and in 1883 came to Parker and engaged in the hardware business which he has conducted ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Chase have been blest with seven children; Maria L., a missionary to Fusan, Korea; Eva F., wife of B. W. Kumler of Parker; Montgomery J., of Chicago, IL; Josephine A., Adeline M., Warren J. and Dolly K. all residing at home.
