Born April 17, 1923, in Birmingham, Ala., she was the daughter of Eunice and Eugene Shields; was raised and educated there; and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1941. She then worked as a secretary for an insurance company. On Oct. 19, 1944, she married Glen David Barr at her parents' home in Birmingham. They met at a USO club during World War II and, following their marriage, moved to Denver, where he was stationed in the U. S. Air Force and she was a receptionist at Denver Univeristy. In 1946, the couple moved to Newcastle. She was a bookkeeper for Barr's Auto Clinic, her husband's automotive repair business, for more than 30 years. She was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2516 and a 50-year member of First United Methodist Church of Newcastle. Known for her generosity, kindness, and positive outlook on life, she enjoyed camping, rock-collecting, cooking, traveling, playing cards, and visiting with family and friends. In earlier years, she was an avid bowler. Survivors include her daughter, Jan Capps, and her husband of Casper; granddaughter, Jenny Capps of Denver; sister, Mildred McDonald of Birmingham; a niece; and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. The family would appreciate memorials to Weston County Senior Center or First UMC.
