Kenneth Baughman officiating. Burial was in the North Madison Cemetery, near Center Junction, on land that her great-grandfather, Eliphalet A. Nichols, donated for a cemetery. Jean Balster died September 20 at her home of leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer. She was born on September 11,1919, the daughter of James and Gladys Smith McNeilly at Center Junction and was raised on the family's farm there. She graduated from Center Junction High School in 1937 and attended Cornell College for three years. On November 29,1945, she married Les Balster of Scotch Grove, where she lived the rest of her life. In addition to raising her family, she was active in youth work, serving as Rainbow Mother Advisor in Monticello for many years and as a sponsor of the Youth Fellowship Group at the Center Junction Presbyterian Church. In later years, she was active in programs devoted to the elderly. She served as the Jones County Coordinator for the Heritage Agency on Aging and until the time of her death was chairman of the Care Review Committee of the Senior Home, and chairman of the Senior Housing Board, both in Monticello. She was active in church work at the Center Junction Presbyterian Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was a church elder, Sunday school teacher and member of the United Presbyterian Women, as well as church organist for 36 years. In the summer of 1987, she headed the program committee for the Scotch Grove Sesquicentennial and organized the Center Junction High School Alumni Reunion. Survivors include her husband, Les; four children, Lynn Liontos of Eugene, OR, Steven Balstet of Seattle, W A, David Balster of MonticeUo and Susan Zazas of Miami, FL; two grandsons, Brian and Kevin Balster; two brothers Maurice and John McNeilly of Shenandoah and her sister, Ruth Buck of Salem, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents. Goettsch Funeral Home in Monticello was in charge of arrangements.
