Steve was born in Monticello, Iowa on March 14, 1945 to Leslie Milton Balster and Jean Joy McNeilly Balster of Scotch Grove, Iowa. He graduated from Monticello High School in 1963 and was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball, baseball and track, and held the school record in the 880 run. He was also an Eagle Scout. In 1967 he received his B.A. from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, and did graduate work in anthropology at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. He later also trained as a massage therapist in Phoenix, Arizona. In the 1970s Steve worked for Balster's Implement & Parts Company as a sales associate until he headed west in 1980. He lived in California, Oregon and Arizona in the 80s, and traveled to India many times until the mid-90s. In l987 he moved to Seattle, where he began his painting career, which eventually led to the startup of his own firm, Balster's Painting Company. Steve took great pride in his painting, was a hard worker, and was completing various painting jobs up until the end of his life. Steve loved dancing, and took many dance classes in Seattle, becoming adept at waltz and swing dancing. He was passionate about gardening, especially roses. He planted hundreds of heirloom roses in his own yards and also in friends' yards, and hosted annual ‘rose parties.' Steve was interested in various kinds of healing work through the years, had many spiritual interests and liked learning new things. He loved e-mailing and sharing thoughts and photos with others. He returned to Scotch Grove at least annually, and loved the surrounding countryside. He was at the Balster Auction in mid-September shortly before he died. His family will miss Steve's sweet presence, his soft-spoken voice and his unique outlook on the world. Steve's friends in Seattle held two ceremonies in his remembrance, on October 1 and October 2, 2011, which his brother, David Balster (and family), attended. Steve was cremated at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home in Seattle on October 5, which included a special service, in which his brother also participated. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Les and Jean Balster. Survivors include two sisters, Lynn Balster Liontos of Eugene, Oregon and Susan J. (Yorgos) Zazas of Miami Lakes, Florida, and his brother, David M. (Barbara) Balster of Monticello, Iowa, and two nephews, Brian M. Balster of Denver, Colorado, and Kevin C. Balster of Monticello, Iowa.
