Jean Virginia Smith was born September 16, 1919 in Dubuque, Iowa. She was the youngest of four children. Read More	Jean Carlson, 96, of Monona, Iowa died Saturday, October 17, 2015 in Ossian, Iowa in the care and company of her loving family. Jean Virginia Smith was born September 16, 1919 in Dubuque, Iowa. She was the youngest of four children. Jean lived with the family until the age of two, at which time she was sent to live with her great aunt, Cora Hill, in McGregor, Iowa. Since the Hill family lacked ready access to a road or school, she was moved to the home of Mildred Kyle, a close relative of her great aunt and then to the home of their neighbors, William and Fannie Klotzbach. “Uncle Bill and Aunt Fannie” and their two sons, Donald and Robert, made the farm a warm home for Jean, where she lived through grade school and two years of high school. Jean was baptized and confirmed on the same day at the age of thirteen. After her foster mother’s death, Jean quit high school and spent time on the farm until she was united in marriage with Emil Frederick Carlson on February 12, 1937 in Galena, Illinois. Emil and Jean spent their first year in a trailer home near Millville, Iowa then moved to a farm near Pike’s Peak in 1938. After the tragic deaths of their infant son in 1939 and their two-year old daughter, Janet, in 1940, the couple moved to a farm on the other side of Sny Magill Valley, near Swede Ridge. With the birth of Robert in 1941 and Margie in 1942, the family moved to a larger farm on Moody Ridge and then to a farm northeast of Postville in 1945. Here they welcomed three more children, Lowell in 1946, Joann in 1949, and Lois in 1952. They lived on this farm until 1987, when they moved into Postville. After leaving Postville, Jean moved into the “Davis Street” apartments in Monona where she enjoyed many good times with her friends and new neighbors. After a short stay at Garden View in Monona, Jean moved to Ossian in 2012 to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Pat. Jean was a devout Christian and an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, Iowa. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, nature and wildlife, and traveling with family. Most recently she enjoyed spending time with Buford, her special cat. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Emil; a daughter, Janet; three sons, Robert, Lowell, and a son who died in infancy; and a great grandson, Logan. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, Iowa. Rev. Harold McMillin will be the officiant. Interment will be held at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at First Lutheran Cemetery (Swede Ridge), McGregor, Iowa.
