For access to this cemetery, special arrangements will have to be made with the cemetery office, located at Saint Joseph New Cemetery. Although this cemetery is immediately across West 8th Street from Old Saint Joseph Cemetery, the two are not affiliated with one another. In 1842, Catholic Archbishop John B. Purcell purchased 19.22 acres at the terminus of West 8th Street at Enright Avenue. The land was divided, half for German Catholic burials and half for Irish Catholic burials, and the cemetery was founded as St. Joseph Cemetery in 1843. Later, West 8th Street was extended west through the cemetery, making it necessary to relocate some burials, most of which were in the Irish section of the cemetery. The road extension split the cemetery into two. The portion of the cemetery on the north side of the street became the Saint Joseph Irish Cemetery while the portion on the south side of the street became the Saint Joseph German Cemetery (or the Old Saint Joseph Cemetery, as it is commonly called). The Saint Joseph German Cemetery was extended to the west and south of the original parcel of land and today remains an active cemetery under management of the Cincinnati Catholic Cemetery Society. The Saint Joseph Irish Cemetery was land-locked and could not be extended in size at that location. When all of the lots had been sold, Bishop Purcell purchased 61.31 acres two miles west of the original cemetery site in 1853. The Saint Joseph Irish Cemetery and the New Saint Joseph Cemetery were maintained under the same management. In 1880, that management was incorporated as the Saint Joseph Cemetery Association, which operates and maintains both cemeteries today. On the Saint Joseph New Cemetery website, a searchable database of burials in both cemeteries can be found under the heading “Genealogy”. Burials that are listed as “Old Cemetery” under the section heading are located in the Saint Joseph Irish Cemetery, not the Saint Joseph New Cemetery. The cemetery is # 4598 (Old Saint Joseph Irish Cemetery) in “Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003”, compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
