She came to the United States at the age of 16 and settled in the Gilman area. On February 11, 1909, she was married to Selmer Nelson at Marshalltown. Daniel Ogata officiating, burial at Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman. The daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Smith Carroll, she was born July 29, 1891, in County Antrim, Ireland. She came to the United States at the age of 16 and settled in the Gilman area. On February 11, 1909, she was married to Selmer Nelson at Marshalltown. The couple farmed near Gilman and later moved to the Brooklyn [Iowa] area. Mr. Nelson died in 1941 and two years later Mrs. Nelson moved to Brooklyn. She lived in California with her daughter for five years and later spent 15 years in Marshalltown before moving to Grinnell in 1963. She was a member of the Grinnell First United Presbyterian Church and was a 50-year member of the Rebekah Lodge in Gilman and Brooklyn. She was past noble grand in the Gilman lodge. Survivors include her children, Elmer LeRoy Nelson of Malcom, Mrs. Charles (Mildred Mae) Smith of Grinnell, Mrs. Howard (Verna Marie) Dodge of Sacramento, California, Carroll (Kelly) Nelson of Newton, and Mrs. Dale (Helen Geanette) Lippincott of Brooklyn, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two infant sons, and eight brothers and sisters. Added 19 Feb 2018
