Pigman Dead Jefferson S. Pigman died last night at 7 o’clock, at his home in Neosho Rapids. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 o’clock at the Free Methodist church of Neosho Rapids, and the interment will be in the Neosho Rapids cemetery. Jefferson S. Pigman was born in Ohio in 1830, and moved with his father and mother to Muscatine, Iowa, in 1838. He came to Kansas in 1855, locating first at the junction of the Neosho and Cottonwood, later at Columbia, two and one-half miles southeast of the [line is obscure] immediately north of the Columbia crossing-now Columbia bridge-at the edge of the timber. This town was laid out early in 1855, soon after Mr. Pigman’s arrival, but was abandoned when Emporia was located in such close proximity. The own never grew beyond the proportions of a long store and post office , combined, a double log dwelling house, a blacksmith shop and perhaps one or two other buildings. A family named Whitaker lived in half of the dwelling house part of the time, and the other half was occupied by its owner and his family, the late Reason Snow, a pioneer known to most of the early settlers of this community. Mr. Pigman said a man named Simcox opened the first store and was the first postmaster, although he (Mr. Pigman) handled the mail for a time. Mr. Pigman opened a store in the fall of 1856, but moved it to Neosho Rapids in the spring of 1857. After Emporia was located, that same year, the Columbia post office was discounted, and the town disappeared from the face of the earth. On the journey from Iowa to Kansas Mr. Pigman was accompanied by John Evans. On their arrival at Charles Withington’s home on the old Santa Fe trail in the northern part of this county- Mr. Withington was Lyon county’s first settler-they fell in with John Rosenquist and a man named Addis, with his family, and from that place they journeyed to the Junction together. They were the first settlers in the neighborhood of the Junction. Evans died on his claim in the summer of 1857. Addis left in 1856, and has been dead many years. John Rosenquist afterward settled on a farm south of the Rapids, on which he lived till his death a few years ago. Mr. Pigman was the last of the little company that made the first homes at the Junction. Mr. Pigman’s home always was at Neosho Rapids after leaving Columbia. He sold his store after a few years and moved on a farm a mile or two outside the town. The town and community always were dear to him, and he was a power for righteousness. Plain, straightforward, upstanding, he knew no compromise between right and wrong, and his personality made his views on any subject of importance in the community. He was one of the pillars of the Free Methodist church of Neosho Rapids and its welfare was perhaps dearer to him than anything else aside from his family. The college of that institution, which was burned twenty-seven years ago and never has been rebuilt owed much of its existence to the efforts of Mr. Pigman. A couple of years ago the Free Methodist held their annual camp meeting a mile or two from the Rapids in the opposite side of the town from the Pigman home. Mrs. Pigman was an invalid and cold not go to the meetings and could not be left alone at night, so Mr. Pigman walked the three miles to the meetings every day and went home at night and no one seemed to enjoy the services more than he. He was a kindly, intelligent man, who read the newspapers, he said, that he might know what the world was doing, even though of late years he felt he had had little part in the world’s work. But his interest in the present day issues was just as keen at 82 as it was in the early days of which he delighted to tell. Mrs. Pigman is living, and there are four children, all married, and sixteen grandchildren.
