Description	:	Jehiel Spencer Carr, known as "Heil", was born about a year before the War between the States. His mother (Thankful Carr) died about six weeks after his birth. Mary, the wife of his eldest brother (James Riley), who was with the family at the time of his mother's death, took care of the baby until January of 1861 when the father (Darius) married Elvira Dunham Bullard, a childless widow. Read More	Jehiel Spencer Carr, known as "Heil", was born about a year before the War between the States. His mother (Thankful Carr) died about six weeks after his birth. Mary, the wife of his eldest brother (James Riley), who was with the family at the time of his mother's death, took care of the baby until January of 1861 when the father (Darius) married Elvira Dunham Bullard, a childless widow. She was good to Hiel and loved him as his own mother. When about nine years old, the family moved to McHenry County, Illinois where they lived until 1881 when Hiel, his brother George, George's wife (Sarah Etta) and the parents of George and Heil (Darius and Elvira) removed to Franklin County Iowa. In Iowa, things did not go so well at first. The father (Darius) had gone into debt for the land and was growing old. The sons assumed the responsibility for the debt. A prairie fire burned out all they had and times were bad. Hiel became acquainted with a young school teacher from Cascade, Iowa. She was the daughter of a Baptist minister who held spelling bees and cyphering matches for the young people of the community. In 1890, they were married and took a farm near Alexander, Iowas, where they lived for several years. In 1898, tey purchased a farm in Grant township, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, where they resided until 1915, when they retired to the village of Clear Lake. In 1919, they moved to Washington, D.C. to be with their daughter (Minnie Edna) who was in Government service. By that time, Heil's health was broken. He was able to realize a lifetime ambition to visit Mt. Vernon, The White House and The Capitol, but the following year, after an illness of about nine months, he passed away. Sara lived in Washington with her daughter (Minnie Edna) until her death in 1942. Both Hiel and Sara are buried in the cemetery near Alexander, Iowa, as is the brother George. Mr. Carr was a hard working, upright Christian gentleman. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Clear Lake, Iowa. Jehiel and Sara have one daughter.
