Mrs. Thorp has been secretary and treasurer for twenty years of the Ladies Social Gathering. Addison A. Wells, who was the father of Mrs. Thorp, was born in 1832 in Cattaraugus county, New York. He was a stone-mason and contractor, and he moved to Hardin county, Iowa, in 1855. In St. Charles county, Illinois, he was married to Mary Ann Marvin, daughter of Seth Marvin, and the following children were born to them: Carlton S., living near Emmetsburg, Iowa; Jennie, wife of Mr. Thorp, of this review; Elmer M., deceased; May is the wife of C. W. Cook, of Emmet, Idaho; Nina married L. P. Stillman, of Dolliver, Iowa. The death of Addison A. Wells occurred in 1905, after a useful and industrious life, He was a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the Masonic fraternity and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a contractor and builder, a promoter, a public spirited man to whom Iowa Falls owes much, His father, Joseph Wells, died at the age of seventy-four years, dying on the fiftieth anniversary of his marriage. He brought his family to Iowa Falls in August, 1855, and continued to live here until his death, about 1876. He is remembered as one of the honest, industrious pioneers, firm in his convictions, religiously and politically, and he always took a definite stand on every important question. A fine mechanic, he left enduring monuments of his handiwork in this locality. He was a good man in every sense of the word. Harrison Cady, first husband of Mrs. Thorp. was born in Boone, Illinois, on May 7. 1843, where he lived during the earlier part of his life. In the year 1862, while a student at Beloit College, he enlisted in the Union army as a volunteer and was appointed provost marshal, in which capacity he served three years or until the close of the war. He was a member of the governor's staff and as such went with the governor to meet the remains of President Lincoln when they were brought home to Springfield, Illinois, for burial. A few years after the war he moved to Waverly, Iowa, and in 1868 to Iowa Falls, where he· engaged in the jewelry business. The frame building which he occupied was burned in the disastrous fire of 1874, but most of his stock was saved and afterwards he occupied quarters in the hardware store of T.B. Knapp, later occupying a building with S.V. Smith, the two entering into partnership in in 1881 under the firm name of Smith & Cady, which continued until the death of the junior partner. On May 6, 1881, Mr. Cady was united in marriage with Jennie Wells. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity. As a young man he was possessed of unusual energy and strength. He was captain of the first fire department at Iowa Falls, the hook and ladder company which rendered efficient service in the fire of 1874. He was at one time deputy sheriff of Hardin county, and was elected for three successive terms mayor of Iowa Falls. As a public servant, he gave eminent satisfaction to all concerned. Mr. Cady's death occurred on May 3, 1891, when he lacked a few days of his forty-ninth birthday. Generous, sympathetic and kind, he will long have a warm place in the hearts and memories of the people of Iowa Falls. [From Past and Present of Hardin County, Iowa, published 1911.
