If he be honest and successful in his chosen field of endeavor, investigation will brighten his fame and point the way along which others may follow with like success. The reputation of Thomas Thorp, one of the leading citizens of Iowa Falls, Hardin county, having been unassailable all along the highway of life, according to those who have known him best, it is believed that a critical study of his career will be of benefit to the reader, for it has not only been one of honor but of usefulness also. Mr. Thorp is the scion of a sterling family of the Badger state, his birth having occurred in Lafayette county, that state, on January 30, 1856. He is the son of James F. and Elizabeth (Simons) Thorp, both natives of England, where they were educated, grew up and they were married after they came to America and there devoted themselves to farming pursuits, locating in Lafayette county, Wisconsin, where they secured a good home. The father died in 1892 and the mother's death occurred in 1876. Thomas Thorp grew up on the home farm and assisted with the general work about the place, attending the common schools in the winter time. In 1877 he was united in marriage with Analine Kempthorn, of Jo Daviess county, Illinois, and that year came to Franklin county, Iowa. This union resulted in the birth of the following children: J.T., who is now farming in Franklin county, Iowa; Arthur K. lives in Floyd county, Iowa; Nellie is now attending Ellsworth College. The wife and mother passed away in 1903. Thomas Thorp first rented land for three years, then bought eighty acres, afterwards adding to his original purchase until he became the owner of two hundred and forty acres of excellent land in Franklin county, Iowa. He afterwards engaged in the furniture business in Iowa Falls, also other lines of endeavor claimed his attention, and he met with a large measure of success at whatever he attempted, becoming, in due course of time, one of the substantial and influential business men of this vicinity. Mr. Thorp is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, also the Order of Fraternal Bankers of Cedar Rapids. He is a Republican in politics and for several years was township trustee of Lee township, Franklin county, Iowa, also held other township offices, always with satisfaction to the people. Mr. Thorp was married a second time, having espoused, in November, 1906, Mrs. Jennie (Wells) Cady, of Iowa Falls, and they are now living retired in their modern, cozy and beautiful home in Iowa Falls.
