Laursen, 89, longtime resident of the Atlantic vicinity, died at 11:55 Sunday morning at the Salem invalid home in Elk Horn, where he had lived 3 1/2 years. Mr. Laursen, the son of Jorgen and Helen Laursen, was born in Denmark Aug. 12, 1863, and came to America when he was 18 years old, locating on a farm southwest of Elk Horn. He was married there to Hansine Hansen Aug. 12, 1891 and they lived on a farm eight miles north of Atlantic 30 years prior to moving to Atlantic in 1921. He had made his home in Elk Horn since March 1949. Mr. Laursen was a member of the Oak Hill Lutheran Church. Mrs. Laursen died last April 3. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Walter Nelson and Mrs. A.G. McCrory of Atlantic, Mrs. Alfred Sand of san Diego, and Mrs. Walter Wittrup of Elk Horn; two sons, John Laursen of Atlantic and Chris Laursen of Denver; a foster brother, Chris Sorensen of Audubon; 22 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. A daughter died in 1918. Funeral services will be held in the chapel at the Salem home at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, following a short service at the home of his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wittrup, at 1p.m. The remains will be taken from the Roland funeral home to the Wittrup home in Elk Horn Thursday morning and interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery west of Brayton. 1889-courtesy of Burt A. Wittrup, El Paso, TX; My mother, Meta Laursen Wittrup, had several letters from Jorgen Laursen to her dad, Jens Peter Laursen, who emigrated to America in 1881. Jan. 2, 1889, Jorgen to Jens Peter: "See in your last letter that you would like to get married. Can't see anything against that. Christian Hansen's daughter Stine has decided to make the trip to America next spring; someone said probably to join Jens Peter. She's a very capable girl. Can't go very far wrong, but that's just a suggestion." March 27, 1889: Jorgen said this was a letter he had been dreading to write. Stine had died of typhus. "Followed her to the cemetery," earlier in the day he was writing the letter. "Nothing more to hope in that one, but there are others and could find one for you." 1891 Jens Peter then made a trip back to Denmark, in part to find a bride. He did find Hansine, who was a sister to Stine.
