Read More	CIVIL WAR VETERAN AND PIONEER DIES James Sorenson, Honored Soldier-Citizen, Died in His Eightieth Year Last Saturday witnessed the passing of one of Nunda township’s leading pioneer citizens, one of the few surviving veterans of the Civil War, James Sorenson, at his home east of Emmons. Few men take with them from this world more honor and respect than did this venerable citizen and soldier. Resident of Nunda township since the close of the Civil War, he so lived as husband, father, neighbor and friend that he won the highest regard and esteem of his fellow men. When he laid down the duties and cares of this life at the age of eighty years, there was the unmistakable touch of sincere sorrow in the word that carried the news from friend to friend throughout the community. No greater eulogy could be spoken or written than the respectful and sorrowful attitude of those who had known him for years when they learned that he had left them and passed on to his well earned rest and glory in the eternal world beyond. James Sorenson, as he was designated in the American tongue, was one of the early settlers in the neighboring county of Worth, Iowa. Answering the call for volunteers to defend the Union he saw three years of hard campaigning in the South, 1862-1865, entering the army and coming out of it as a private with the honors that have always been given and will always be given to the private in the ranks without whom the glories of victory are never won. After the close of the war he took land in Nunda township, Freeborn county, Minn., and prospered as a farmer. He was prominent in the affairs of the community, being a faithful member of the Silver Lake congregation of the Norwegian Lutheran church, serving for ten years as township supervisor, always meeting every trust and responsibility fully and efficiently, deserving and winning the confidence of all. Jens Sorenson Lah was born in Solvong, Norway, June 1, 1839. His parents were Soren og Jensine Lah. He came to America in 1854, stopping for three years in Dane county, Wis., then coming to Worth county, Iowa, where he resided until 1862 when he enlisted on Aug. 22 in Co. B, 32nd Reg. Iowa Vol. Inf. He was honorably discharged on the 4th day of Aug., 1865, having taken part in ten battles during the last year of the war. The last three of these battles were Old Town Creek, Nashville, Tenn., and Blakely, Ala. His war record is one in which his descendants may well take pride. Returning to private life he took homestead and farmed land in Nunda township, Freeborn County, where he resided until the day of his death, July 19, 1919. On March 13, 1856, he was married to Mary O. Sorbo. The wife and eight children survive him. The children, Mrs. Ed (Christine) Brua, Mrs. Asle (Julia) Larson, Mrs. T. N. (Clara) Flaten, Mrs. George (Emma) Rasmusson, Sam Lah, Jens Sorenson, Ole Sorenson, Mrs. Henry (Betsy) Hanson. There are 35 living grandchildren. He also leaves one brother, Soren Sorenson, Albert Lea, two sisters, Mrs. (Metta) Torkelson, Emmons, Minn., and Mrs. (Anna) Dahl, Northwood, Iowa. His parents and four children: Anna Louvisa Undahl, Olina (Lena) Fredrika Larson, Mary Josefene Sorenson-Lah, and Ole Jenson Lahd, preceded him in death. Funeral services and interment were conducted at Silver Lake Lutheran church and cemetery, the pastor, Rev. O. C. Brenna, officiating, assisted by Rev. Blevig of Thompson, Iowa. There was a large attendance, friends and relatives being present from Albert Lea and Emmons, Minn., Northwood and Lake Mills, Iowa, in addition to people of the home neighborhood who turned out in large numbers.
