She was baptized in infancy (19 November 1844), and confirmed July 3, 1859 by Rev. Hanson in Vang. In the Spring of 1862, together with her parents, three sisters and four brothers, the family departed Norway on the 24th of March and immigrated to America. They came to Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa, where the family lived for about a year, and then moved to Deer Creek in Mitchell County, Iowa. Her parents were Ole and Gunvor (Lunde) Sorbo. She was baptized in infancy (19 November 1844), and confirmed July 3, 1859 by Rev. Hanson in Vang. In the Spring of 1862, together with her parents, three sisters and four brothers, the family departed Norway on the 24th of March and immigrated to America. They came to Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa, where the family lived for about a year, and then moved to Deer Creek in Mitchell County, Iowa. Marit experienced all the hardships incident to the life of the pioneer girls during the Civil War period. When laborers were hard to find during the war years she earned from one to two dollars per day doing a man’s work on nearby farms. On March 12, 1867, she was united in marriage to Jens Sorenson-Lah, a Civil War Veteran, by the late Rev. Torgerson. In 1869 they bought eighty acres in section 35, Nunda Township, in Minnesota and later an additional 20 acres; then another 126 acres just south of this in Iowa. The log house which Jens constructed in the 1860’s, is one of the few remaining log houses which have not been sided over. This sturdy couple reared a family of twelve children and started each of them with land for farming. Here, Mrs. Sorenson resided until the death of her husband twelve years ago (1919), after which she made her home with two of her daughters, Mrs. George Rasmusson and Mrs. Henry Hanson. Mrs. Jens Sorenson passed away last Saturday afternoon, February 28, 1931 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Hanson in Albert Lea. She had been confined to her bed for more than two years prior to her death. Her age was 86 years and 4 months. Funeral services were held yesterday (March 4, 1931) from the Hanson home at Albert Lea at one o’clock, and at 2:30 at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. The church was filled with relatives and friends. Mrs. Narverud of Albert Lea sang a beautiful song at the home. The Silver Lake Church choir and the Greig men’s chorus also rendered some beautiful songs and Rev. Hans Fosnes, her pastor, officiated at the home, the church and the grave. Burial was made in the Silver Lake Lutheran cemetery beside the body of her husband. The pallbearers were five of her grandsons and one great grandson, namely, Lawrence Brua, Jens Sorenson, Norance Flaten, Arnold Sorenson, Truman Sorenson and Vernal Nelson. Mrs. Sorenson is survived by seven children, namely: Mrs. Ed (Christine) Brua, Sam Sorenson, Mrs. T.N. (Clara) Flaten, Ole Sorenson, Mrs. George (Emma) Rasmusson, and Jens Sorenson, all of Emmons, and Mrs. Henry (Betsy) Hanson of Albert Lea. Thirty-six grandchildren and thirty-seven great grandchildren; also two brothers, Ole Sorbo of Leland, Iowa, and Nels Sorbo of Emmons and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Trytten of Mason City, Iowa and Mrs. Emma Svien of Erskine, Minnesota. Her husband and five children: Julia Sophia Larson, Anna Lovisa Undahl, Olina (Lena) Fredrika Larson, Mary Josefene Sorenson, and Ole Jenson Sorenson Lah preceded her in death. Mrs. Sorenson was a very ambitious woman and was never found idle as long as she was able to work. She was a devout Christian and took great interest in church work and in the welfare of the community. Peace be with her memory.
