Herman, 77, Taken By Death Rites Monday For Vanlue Resident Jerome Joseph Herman, prominent Vanlue resident, died at 12:30 o'clock this morning in Findlay. He was 77. Mr. Herman, who suffered a stroke on June 11, had been a patient in the hospital since July 3. A son of Joseph and Catherine (Leitzel) Herman, he was born Nov. 13, 1871, in Vicksburg, Union county, Pa. He moved to Vanlue from Vicksburg in 1895. He entered the hay and straw business shortly after going to Vanlue and continued in that endeavor until about three years ago. In 1898, he purchased the George Alspach general store, and later the Mack Hammond grocery, the Ira Potts-Sherman Buckingham general store and the Vanlue & Feasle hardware store, all of which were moved into his general store in the I. O. O. F. building. He operated these businesses for 16 years. After selling the store, he acquired more farm land and for several years was a large feeder of lambs. For the past 20 years, his farm operations were specialized in feeding of Hereford cattle. * * * MR. HERMAN was a member of the Dreisbach Lutheran church while at Vicksburg. Shortly after coming to Ohio, he was converted at the Christian Union church, and later became a member of the Evangelical United Brethren church at Vanlue, where his affiliations remained until his death. Surviving are his wife, the former Laura E. Schuck, whom he married on Dec. 22, 1897; two daughters, Mrs. Theodore E. Ellis, Cleveland; and Mrs. Richard Poulton, Columbus; four sons, Harold A., New Haven, Conn.; Marion J., Vanlue; C. Foster, Columbus; and Russell E. Herman, 719 South Main street. He also leaves three brothers, John F., 1130 North Main street; G. Foster Herman, Williamsport, Pa.; and C. E. Herman, Lewisburg, Pa.; and eight grandchildren. Deceased are two sisters, Mrs. Emma Himmelreich and another who died in infancy, and a brother, Henry Howard Herman. * * * MR. HERMAN was president of the Vanlue school board for 30 years. He belonged to the I.O.O.F. and the K. of P. lodges for 50 years. He also was a member of the Lions club and the Hancock County Farmers club division of the Findlay Chamber of Commerce. During the 51 years of his membership with the Value E.U.B. church, he served 3 years as a trustee of the church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the church in Value with the pastor, the Rev. W. L. Gunther, and the Rev. Fred Esterly, of Sidney, officaiting. Interment will be in the Van Horn cemetery. The body was taken to the Russell E. Herman funeral home where friends may call after 5 p.m. today. The body will be at the residence in Vanlue after 10 a.m. Sunday. Ellis Jones, McComb funeral director, is in charge of the services. Herman Funeral Conducted At Vanlue** Funeral services for Jerome Joseph Herman, 77, prominent Value resident who died Saturday in Findlay hospital, were held yesterday in the Vanlue E.U.B. church. The Rev. W. L. Gunther, pastor, and the Rev. Fred Esterly, Sidney, officiated. Pallbearers were Omar Beck, Dale Beard, George Oman, Lee Miller, Everett Lee and Ray Shull. Honorary pallbearers were Lem Cole, Virgil Thomas, Earl Beck, Ernest Loader, Earl Beard and Lem Huston. A large crowd of mourners attended the services. A profusion of flowers was given by friends and relatives. Committal was in Van Horn cemetery. Ellis Jones, McComb funeral director, was in charge of the services.
