Description	:	The 2nd Iowa Infantry mustered Keokuk,Iowa. Deployed to St Joseph,MO Jun 13,1861 where it remained on railroad guard duty and aided in maintaining order until latter part of July, then sent to Birds Point until October, then St Louis until February 1862 guarding prisoners and recuperating. Deployed to St Joseph,MO Jun 13,1861 where it remained on railroad guard duty and aided in maintaining order until latter part of July, then sent to Birds Point until October, then St Louis until February 1862 guarding prisoners and recuperating. Climate at Birds Point was such that only 400 men were fit for duty. An incident at St Louis led to an unjust order, the regiment being marched in public disgrace from its quarters to the levee for embarkation to Battle of Ft Donelson without music and its colors furled; the reason being that someone had stolen some stuffed rabbits from a museum at McDowell College - at that time used as a prison. The culprit not being discovered the regiment was held to be guilty of the crime and suffered accordingly. At battle of Ft Donelson,TN Feb 15-16 1862 redeemed itself, storming the fort, leading the column compelling the enemy to seek his inner lines. But it had paid dearly with 41 killed and 157 wounded out of 630 in action. The 2nd Iowa participated in the Battle of Shiloh April 6-7 1862 its brigade repulsing several assaults, the regiment losing 80 killed and wounded. It took part in the siege of Corinth,MS and pursuit of Beauregard's forces May 1862. In October 3-5 1862, the Confederates assaulted Corinth trying to retake the city. It was a desperate battle resulting in massive casualties for all involved. Colonel Baker leading a brave charge was killed on the first day. Lt Colonel Mills fell the second day. The regiment's loss was 108 killed, wounded and missing out of 346 engaged. The regiment went into winter quarters at Pulaski,Tn. On Dec 9 it marched to Tuscumbia,AL in pursuit of raiders but returned on the 23rd after one of the hardest marches in its history. In 1863, the regiment went on expeditions to Hamburg, Jacinto, Northern Alabama. Duty at Corinth till August, then LaGrange, Pulaski, guarding Nashville & Decatur Railroad till May 1864. In May it joined the Atlanta Campaign resulting in the Battles of Resaca, Lays Ferry, Oostenaula River, Dallas, New Hope Church, Kenesaw Mt, siege of Atlanta, Jonesboro, Sherman's March to the Sea, siege of Savannah. Jan-Apr 1865 it participated in the Carolina's Campaign with battles of Edisto River, Bentonville,N.C., Occupation of Raleigh. After surrender of Johnston and his army, the regiment went to Washington D.C. for the Grand Review. (Info from "The Union Army" published 1908.)
