He was 90 and had been treated for throat and lung cancer. Hassett's tenure in political office started in 1962 when he was appointed Douglas County election commissioner. It ended in 2000 when he lost his seat on the Metropolitan Utilities District board at age 81. A comeback attempt in the 2001 District 3 City Council primary failed. Hassett, a native of Denison, Iowa, moved to Omaha in 1929 when his parents lost their farm at the start of the Great Depression. Hassett was a top graduate of Creighton Prep and attended Creighton University and Michigan State University. He was a combat engineer with Gen. George Patton's army in Europe during World War II. Gov. Frank Morrison appointed him county election commissioner after Hassett was Morrison's Omaha campaign manager. Hassett served as election commissioner from 1962 to 1968. He was a County Board member in 1971 and 1972 and on the Omaha City Council from 1973 to 1981. He was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor in the 1981 primary election. He was elected to the first of two six-year terms on the MUD board in 1988. He served a stint as director of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce governmental affairs office. He was a longtime member of the College World Series board and of many civic and professional organizations. In recent years, he kept an office as a real estate broker at Century 21 Dundee. Survivors include longtime friend Anita McKulsky of Omaha and eight nieces and nephews. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1502 S. 48th St.
