Jerry was born on September 18, 1939, on a farm in rural Edgar, to Elmer and Lillian (Kirkhoff) Shuck. During his early years, he grew up helping his family on the farm and graduated from Edgar High School in 1957. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and then worked as a heavy equipment operator for Shuck Engineering. One of their projects was building the highway west of Arcadia, NE. This is where he met his future wife. On September 20, 1959, Jerry married Carole Jean Smith in Arcadia, NE and thereafter had two sons, Danny and Steve. He then worked for the Bureau of Reclamation building the Sherman Dam. His next job with the Bureau was building power lines in Arizona. While living in Phoenix, Jerry attended government schooling to become a soil and concrete inspector for the tower bases. Jerry’s interest in aviation led him to obtain his private pilot’s license at the Scottsdale Airport. In 1968, Jerry and his family moved to Owasso, OK where he graduated from the Tulsa Spartan School of Aeronautics and became an A&P licensed mechanic. This led to his employment with American Airlines. Due to a long-term strike at American Airlines, in 1970 he changed careers and worked as an elevator installer and serviceman for Dover Elevator Company. Jerry finally settled back in Edgar in 1976 working for Shuck Drilling Company and later managed Shuck Engineering from which he retired Throughout his life, Jerry was known for his volunteer work. In Owasso, he was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department, assisted with the Boy Scouts of America, coached little league baseball, and served on the board of the Owasso Parks & Recreation. In Nebraska, he was a charter member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 248, a member of the Edgar/Ong Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Ong United Methodist Church. He was also well known for his generosity and willingness to help family and friends. He enjoyed stock car racing, flying small planes, reading, crossword puzzles, and spending time with those close to him. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings; Wendell, Robert, Gordon, Jim, Gloria, and Leah and Ronald who both died as infants. In addition to his wife of 59 years, he is survived by sons Dan (Nora) Shuck of Yuma, AZ and Steve (Carla) Shuck of Beatrice, NE, and his grandchildren: Ashley, Ramsay, Courtney, Garrett, Calvin, and Anthony. Jerry was cremated. As per his wishes, there will be no services. Memorials may be given to the family for a charity of their choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at wmsfh.com.
