The subject of this sketch was known in her old home of Gosport, Indiana, just as "Aunt Rush," She was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Dunning, her paternel grandmother being Rachel, Lady North of England, wife of James Dunning, and her maternal grandmother was Mary Criswell Adam, wife of Samuel Adams who was a cousin of John Adams, second president of the United States. In other words, her father was the son of James and Rachel North Dunning, of England, and her mother was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Criswell Adams of Massachusetts. Samuel Adams, as all know, was a leading American statesman. In the preceedings which resulted at the last Declaration of Independence he bore a comspicuous part, and his name will be found appended to that immortal document, "The Declaration of Independence." Grandma Lacy was a neice of ex-Governor Dunning, whose death occurred several years ago. Her parents moved from Goldsboro, North Carolina, when the father served for several as sheriff in Bloomington, Indiana, and where on May 31, 1828, "Aunt Rush" was born. When she was about eleven months old the family removed to Gosport, same state, where at that time there was nothing but timber and underbrush. Many are the times Grandma has spoken of her happy childhood day when she played in the paw paw thicket where now is the Park. At the age of sixteen she became a member of the Christian Church and contined a faithful and obedient member until death. She was married November 28, 1845 to Milton Lacy of Gosport and to them were born eight children, five of whom survive her, viz, Mrs. Lucy Dittemore of Eureka; Thomas and Edward Lacy of South Salem township; James Lacy of Uniontown, Kentucky, who was unable to be present at his mother's bedside and Mrs. Hattie L. Jelliffe of Bachelor township. She was left a widow March 9, 1875, and although almost overpowered with grief at the loss of a loving, tender companion she continued to reside in Gosport, surrounded by kind, loving friends, until September 1884, when she came to Eureka on a visit with a son and daughter. Shortly after her arrival at Eureka another son and daughter came to reside in Eureka, the latter Mrs. Jolliffe, being her youngest child, and she ever afterwards made her home in Kansas, principally with this daughter. She had been failing in health for several months prior to her death, but nothing of a serious nature appeared until January 12, when her condition became somewhat alarming. On the following day Doctor Grove was summonned and pronounced her troubles to tubercular pneumonia and heart failure and almost if not entirely beyond medical aid. Although watched carefully by her physician and nursed tenderly by her loving children and kind friends she grew rapidly worse until death quietly and peacefully released her at 12:30 o'clock Thursday morning, January 23. The funeral services were held Friday afternoon, at one o'clock at the Christian Church, and were conducted by Elder Ernest Bobbett, the pastor. His text was taken from one of the deceased's favorite chapters, Matthew 5, the 8th verse; "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Following these services the remains were laid away at rest in Greenwood Cemetery to await the Recurrection Morn. None knew her but to love her. No one can inagine the intese suffering she so patiently endured save her loving children and the kind friends who watched over her during last sickness. through it all she never became unmindful of the comfort of those about her and never ceased to thank and praise her children and the friends who assiated them. Almost her last words were: "Lord, let thy servant die in pease." She was a woman of rare intelligence, being able to converse freely upon any subject present to her. Owing to deafness she spent many hours reading such literature as would be a benefit to herself and others. She was not only a mother to her own children, but a mother to all who were bereft of a mother's love and with whom she came in contact. She dearly loved her Bible and nenver closed her eyes at night without first offering up her prayers to the ever loving God. She leaves besides her children, eight little grandchildren to mourn her untimely death, six of these little ones were present and received a parting kiss and loving words from her as death sealed her lips. She leaves a host of relatives and friends, who deeply sympathize with the family in this their great loss, and who trust that they mourn not as those mourn who have no hope, but instead will remember that their loss is heaven's gain. "Our dearest motheer from us has gone; A voice we loved is stilled, A chair is vacant in each our homes, Which never can be filled." From Eureka Herald 31 January 1896 page 8.
