Read More	Obituary of Jerusha Kellogg Jerusha Prior, oldest of a family of nine children, was born in Norton, Ohio, January 26, 1817. At the age of 20 she was united in marriage to Charles Kellogg at North Hampton, Ohio. To this union were born 10 children, four of whom are still living, W.S.; R.C.; and W.C. of Miles and O.E. of Mason City, Iowa. After meeting the privations and bearing the toils of pioneer life in Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Kellogg came to Iowa in 1853 to establish their home with the pioneers of this common wealth. They returned again to Ohio in 1855, but the attractions of the west were alluring, so they made further preparations for an Iowa home and landed here the second time in 1857. They bravely set about to lay the foundations of future prosperity, but the following year the hand of Death was laid upon the husband and father, leaving the mother to care for the interests of four children. The mother and children worked well and industriously until the rumblings of war broke the peace of the nation. The eldest son, W.S. went with blessings and prayers of the widowed mother, to fight for the flag of his country in the ranks of the 24th Iowa regiment of volunteers. The eldest boy at home to help the mother look after the interests of the farm and family was but ten years of age. To the lot and life of Grandma Kellogg the world would say there were many sorrows and afflictions, yet such was the tender sympathy of her nature and her trustful faith in God that the healing balm of her sympathy and love was always a comfort to the stricken and a blessing to her associates. Her sorrow never made her life gloomy and her afflictions opened wider the gates of heaven for the outpouring of God's love upon her life. Her home for many years was upon the farm west of town, where she lived with her son, W.S. Kellogg, and when in 1888 the angel of Death took from the household the wife and daughter, Grandma Kellogg with the patience and tenderness of a mother, cared for the needs of the home until in 1894 in the midst of her duties and activities, she was stricken with paralysis, from which she partially recovered, to be stricken again in 1899, and since then was confined to her chair and bed. What a beautiful picture of a sunshiny disposition and patient trust is left to the memory of her friends who have known her during the years of her confinement. She trusted in God and waited in continuous readiness for the chariot that would come and bear her to the home of eternal joy and blessedness. As one of the sons said. "She was always a christian and her troubles were always taken to God for her trust in Him was perfect." She kept her little testament always in handy reach and its cover is broken and its leaves are torn by usage. Oh, that the world might know the blessings of that book. She was for a number of years the sole surviving mother of the G.A.R. boys of the 24th Iowa. This caused them to regard her even more tenderly, for there is scarcely a sweeter word in the language than "Mother". The consideration of the Grand Army boys brought added appreciation to her life. Her last illness was of two week's duration. Her body which so often had rallied from similar attacks could not muster enough strength for this one and she fell asleep on the morning of July 30th, aged 92 years, 6 months and 4 days. She leaves her sons the rich heritage of the memory of a consistent christian mother's love and trust. To the other members of the household the christian's patient cheerfulness and the triumph of the soul that walks with God. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church, of which she was a member for a number of years, on last Saturday afternoon with interment in the Van Buren cemetery. Rev. J.P. Van Horne, assisted by Rev. Wiggins, of the Congregational church, conducted the services. The choir consisted of Mrs F.A. Menneke, Misses Ramona and Murial Millhaem and Grace Denick, sang "Asleep in Jesus", "It is Not Death To Die", and "Nearer My God To Thee". The pall bearers were J.J. Miles, C.A. Menneke, J. Anderson, R.B. Darling, Wm. Crawford and V. Denick. There was a large crowd out to the funeral, friends coming from all around to pay their last respects to the departed. Many beautiful flowers were in conspicuous display, the last tokens that friends could offer.
