Read More	EDDYVILLE TRIBUNE Eddyville, Iowa Friday, 3 July 1914, Page 6 Obituary for Mrs. Sam Burns The death of Mrs. Sam Burns, a highly esteemed lady residing north of town, occurred at her home in Harrison township at 9:15 o'clock Sunday morning, June 28th, 1914, after an illness of five months. Mary Jerusha Smith, daughter of Oliver smith and Elizabeth Cavanaugh Smith, was born in Eddyville on February 7th, 1855, and passed her entire life of fifty-nine years, five months and twenty-one days in this locality. She was united in marriage with Samuel M. Burns at the home of her parents on New Year's Day, 1873. They went to housekeeping on a farm east of town, and continued to reside there for about fourteen years. For four years thereafter they lived in Eddyville, but for the last twenty-three years they had lived on the farm where she died. This farm adjoined the old family homestead of Mr. Burns' father and was formerly known as the Stanley farm. To Mr. and Mrs. Burns were born three sons, Willie, the eldest, died in infancy. The other two Clair and elwood, together with the husband and one brother and one sister, are left to mourn the loss of a loved one. There are four brothers and sisters; Mrs. D. C. Burns and James Smith, deceased; O. E. smith of Harrison township and Mrs. T. M. Surbaugh of Salt Lake City. Mrs. Burns had been ailing for about thirty years. She was taken sick about February 1st, last, suffering from a general decline. For several weeks her condition had been regarded as serious, and a trained nurse had been in attendance. Owing to her physical condition, Mrs. Burns had never taken membership in any church, though a thorough believer in churches and church work. The funeral was held from the late home at three o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. J. L. Jones, the Congregational pastor, speaking words of comfort to the bereaved relatives and friends. After the funeral services the remains were laid to rest in the family lot in Highland cemetery, there to await the resurrection morn.
