The body, accompanied by the two sons, Clair and Elwood, arrived in Ottumwa last Thursday, July 4th, the party being met at that place by Eddyville relatives, and the remains were brought from there to Eddyville by auto. The funeral services were held from the Hod Burns home at two o'clock Friday afternoon. The funeral discourse was delivered by Rev. Albert S. Kilbourn, the Congregational pastor, after which the remains were laid to rest in the family lot in highland cemetery. The pall bearers were: J. B. Wylie, R. J. Oldham, J. J. Linderman, Dell Harding, A. E. Vance and Alhe Belzer. SKETCH OF HIS LIFE Samuel M. Burns, son of William and Elizabeth Burns, was born in Ashland county, Ohio, July 31st, 1848. He came to Iowa with his parents when about a year old, settling on a farm about four miles north of town in Harrison township. As he continued to reside in Harrison township till two years ago, when he moved to Carpenter, Wyoming, he had spent about sixty-five years of his life in this vicinity. We was united in marriage on January 1st, 1873, to Jerusha Smith, who preceded him in death about four years ago. Three sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Burns, the oldest having died in infancy. The two who survive are Clair and Elwood, who have been living with their father on the ranch in Wyoming. One brother W. F. Burns, of Harrison township, died last summer. He leaves one brother Daniel C. burns, of Eddyville. The subject of our sketch had been ailing almost a year, but was only confined to his bed a few days, his death resulting from heart and kidney trouble, on Monday, July 1st, 1918, at the age of sixty nine years and eleven months. A host of friends back here at the old home regret the death of this well known early Eddyville settler, and extend sympathy to the two sons in their bereavement.
