So in 1892, Jesper and Pernille boarded a ship and headed for America. This journey took 11 weeks and was a long and hard trip for them, especially Pernille, who was very sick, mostly due to being pregnant. They first settled in Pope County, Lowry, MN, and it was there that their first child Anna was born. The following spring they came to ND, homesteading in Haram Township, near Souris. Jesper worked as a hired hand until they claimed their own land. This was done by locating available land. The Homestead Act granted title to 160 acres of land only after certain requirements were met. This "proving up" required a choice of 14 months or 5 years of residence and meeting stated cultivation practices. Jesper paid $1.60 per acre. Their first home, a frame house, 14' x 16', one story high and 1 room, was built in 1893 at a cost of $100. This home had only dirt floors and was dug out in places to form shelves for storing their milk, cream, butter, and eggs that were often taken to merchants in exchange for groceries. It was here that their other children were born, a son Ole and a daughter Hanna. In 1901 Jesper applied for a $450 loan using his homestead quarter as collateral. In order to obtain this loan, he had to give an accounting of property and farming improvements. He listed 100 acres plowed and 20 acres in meadowland. He had 5 horses and 5 cows. The cash value of farming implements and machinery was $300. The value of the land was listed at $1200 and the buildings at $250. The loan was granted for a term of 3 years at an interest rate of 6 percent and the money was to be used to purchase additional land. They eventually acquired 3 quarters. Each child was later given one quarter of land. By 1909, they had a new home - which is the home that his daughter Anna lived in, Anna's son Art and family and now Art's son David Berge lives in, treasures, and works the same land that was homesteaded all those years ago. In 1917, Jesper fell from a wagon as he was climbing down to open a gate. He broke his neck and passed away soon after. Contributor: Shelley Bowers (49522014)
