"Pernille was married April 17, 1891, to Jesper Hoibrenden, son of Osmond and Johanna Hoibrenden of Loftingsomo, Norway. In 1892, they boarded a ship and headed for America. "Pernille was married April 17, 1891, to Jesper Hoibrenden, son of Osmond and Johanna Hoibrenden of Loftingsomo, Norway. In 1892, they boarded a ship and headed for America. This journey took 11 weeks and was a long and hard trip for Pernille, who was very sick, partly due to being pregnant. In preparation for this journey, they packed dried mutton, flat bread, cheeses, bread and butter, etc., in a wooded chest. That chest was later used to store homemade bread, which they baked in the oven of a wood burning stove. They settled in Pope County, Lowry, MN, and on February 2, 1893, their first child Anna Julia was born. The following spring they came to North Dakota, homesteading in Haram Township." Alice continues, "I believe they started working as hired hands until they 'claimed' their own land. This was done by locating available land. The Homestead Act granted title to 160 acres of land only after certain requirements were met. This 'proving up' required a choice of 14 months or 5 years of residence and meeting stated cultivation practices. The cost of land started at $1.25 per acre. Jesper paid $1.60 per acre. These homes were known as 'claim shacks'. Their home, a frame house 14 x 16, one story high and one room, was built in 1893 at a cost of $100. This home had only dirt floors and was dug out in places to form shelves for storing their milk cream, butter, and eggs that were often taken to merchants in exchange for groceries. It was in this home that their other children were born: a son Ole Elmer on June 5, 1895, and a daughter, Hanna Selma, on July 20, 1897. They also built a barn 20 x 30 that year which cost $100." In 1901, Jesper applied for a $450 loan, using his homestead quarter as collateral. In order to obtain this loan, he had to give an account of property and farming improvements. He listed 100 acres plowed (95 acres of wheat and 5 acres of oats), and 20 acres in meadowland. He had 5 horses and 5 cows. The cash value of farming implements and machinery was $300. The value of the land was listed at $1,200 and the buildings at $250 for a total value of $1,450. The loan was granted for a term of 3 years at an interest rate of 6% and the money was to be used to purchase additional land. They eventually acquired 3 quarters. Each child was later given one quarter of land. In 1909, they had a new home 28 feet square and 3 stories high. Lumber was hauled in with teams of horses. The cost of the house, including materials and lumber was $3,000. In 1915, they installed a coal furnace which provided the large home with wonderful hot water heat. In 1917, Jesper fell from a wagon as he was climbing down to open a gate. He broke his neck and passed away on May 30, 1917. Pernille was left to raise the children alone, manage the farm, and pay the many bills. For the next 18 years, Pernille lived there with her children, and her granddaughter Alice. She passed away in May of 1944, from a stroke. Four months later, in September, her son Ole also passed away, and Hanna was left alone. Due to her poor health, it was felt she should not continue to live there. An auction sale was held and she moved into Bottineau. In 1947, Art and Arlene Berge made this their home. 51 years later, their son David moved into the house and continues the tradition of farming the homestead land.
