Description	:	Jess was born to Allen and Mima Woolard in Licking County, Ohio on December 4, 1917. He served in the Pacific with the 742nd Military Police Batallion of the U.S. Army in World War II. The 742d was chosen to provide gaurds for the formal surrender of the Japanese General, Yamashita and his staff. Jess was one of the 31 Military Policeman, all six foot or over, chosen for this assignment. Read More	Jess was born to Allen and Mima Woolard in Licking County, Ohio on December 4, 1917. He served in the Pacific with the 742nd Military Police Batallion of the U.S. Army in World War II. The 742d was chosen to provide gaurds for the formal surrender of the Japanese General, Yamashita and his staff. Jess was one of the 31 Military Policeman, all six foot or over, chosen for this assignment. Under the command of the batallion commander they, on the morning of September 1st went to Bagio, the site of the surrender. Jess was present at and during the signing of the Japanese surrender. After the signing General Yamashita was turned over to the military police and transported to a prisonor of war camp with the seven members of his staff. After the war Jess located to Mansfield where he worked for Mansfield Structural Steel. Because of an accident at work he had to retire in 1951 due to the injuries he sustained. He later became bedfast due to the injuries recieved from that scaffolding collapse. Jess was survived by his wife, Mrs. Edna M. Smith Woolard and mother, Mima Woolard of Newark; two sisters, Marie Strother of Newark and Martha Wilcox of Columbus; and two Brothers, Charles of Newark and Dana of Buckeye Lake. He was preceded in death by his father Allen Woolard(Kidney) of Newark and an infant brother Donald. Military services were conducted at graveside.
