In 1813 he removed to a farm near the present town of Washington, where he continued to reside until his decease, April 11, 1862. He was a member of the Society of Friends and a minister from his youth. He was one of the earliest ministers of the Whitewater meeting. The existence of American slavery he deplored most deeply; and had his life been protracted another short year, he would have had the satisfaction of witnessing. its overthrow. He is represented as having been exemplary in this deportment, and singularly faithful in the discharge of domestic, social, and religious duties. He had eleven children. 1. Nathan, who married Tamar Kenworthy. 2. Robert, who married Rachel Thornburg, and died in 1864. 3. John, who married Mary Barnard, and died in 1867. 4. William C., who married Hannah Locke, daughter of Wm, Locke, an early settler in Perry. 5. Enos, who married Susan Hoover, and removed to Newcastle, where she died in 1869. 6. Isom, who married Dinah Kenworthy, and removed to Miami county, Ind., where he died in 1847. His widow married Jediah Bond; they live at Louisville, Henry county. 7. Ruth, wife of William Nicholson, and resides at Newcastle. 8. Hannah, wife of John Wilson, who died in 1852. 9. Isaac, who married, first, Catharine Eargood, and resides at Peru; second, Millicent Mendenhall. 10. Jesse, who married, first, Jane Cox; second, Harriet Haugh, and resides at Peru. 11. Lydia, wife of Oliver Mendenhall, and resides at Newcastle. =========== *A biographical sketch of Jesse Bond taken from info in Hazzard's History, Henry Co., IN. Jesse Bond, emigrated from Grayson Co., VA to the Territory of Indiana, and purchased and settled on a farm where Earlham College is located. He had his residence in Richmond, Wayne Co., IN, for a few years, then moved to a farm near the site of Washington, Wayne Co., IN, and resided here till his death on April 11, 1862. Jesse was a member of the Society of Friends and one of the first ministers of Whitewater Meeting, for sixty-four years, he was a recorded minister. His communications were not embellished by human learning, yet his ministry was clear and powerful. He seldom gave extended dissertations on abstruse questions of doctrinal controversies. His object was to draw the minds of people to practical rightness - from all outward dependencies to the sure foundation. His devotion to religious truth and duty was shown in the fact that after being in a measure cut off from other opportunities he erected a meeting-house on his farm, where for many years meetings were held twice a week, composed of his family, and the families of his children, and such of his neighbors and others as saw to meet with him. Jesse felt the enormity of African slavery, and his testimony was against it. When the schism in the Society of Friends occurred, he plead with his friends against separate organizations, recommending them to the light of Christ within, as He was one with the Father and all men are brethren. Jesse's mental powers continued unimpaired till the close of his life, a period of four score years and ten. His perception of spiritual truths remained undimmed. His wife, Phoebe, the daughter of the late Robert Commons, a true and worthy companion, died a few years before her husband. Contributor: Angels A-Far
