His parents were Jesse and Phebe Bond, members of the Society of Friends, who removed to Indiana Territory in 1807, bringing Nathan with them. Jesse Bond on their arrival in the Territory entered the land where Earlham College now stands. He used to say that his wagon was the first wheeled vehicle that ever crossed to the west side of White Water in the immediate vicinity of Richmond. He remembered quite well that it required a good deal of digging to enable him to get down and up the banks of the stream and that the road was cut out through the timber and undergrowth. Nathan, though but four years old at the time, used to say that he remembered distinctly crossing White Water on that occasion. Jesse Bond and his family made that first crossing in company with others. The stream may have been crossed by settlers either above or below Richmond, but this was evidently the first time wagons ever forded the stream near that point. At this place, now occupied by Earlham College and its beautiful grounds, Jesse Bond cleared up quite a farm, but sold the land and removed farther west in the year 1815. This time he purchased a piece of land on Green's Fork near where Washington (Greensfork) now stands. Nathan Bond was, by this time, nearly grown. After working on the new farm for a few years, he engaged in operating a carding machine, fulling mill and saw mill along with his father, who had invested a portion of his means in the enterprise. The mills proved to be successful and were also a source of great convenience and help to the new neighborhood. After a few years, Nathan Bond became the owner of the mills. On the 21st day of July, 1824, he was married to Tamar Kenworthy. They were married by Friends ceremony, in the old fashioned way, at Cherry Grove meetinghouse. It seldom occurs that two people live together as husband and wife so long and happily as did Nathan and Tamar Bond. They seemed especially suited to each other. On the 21st day of July, 1874, the friends and relatives of this worthy couple celebrated their golden wedding, and in July, 1888, the sixty-fourth anniversary of their marriage was in like manner remembered by their friends. But Nathan passed away before the sixty-fifth return of the happy day, that made them one, came round. There were three children born to this worthy couple, all of whom grew to maturity of years and honored positions in life. These were: Jonathan K. Bond, Ruth Shaffer, wife of Peter Shaffer, and Mary Jane Draper, wife of Oliver Draper, (both the latter deceased.) Nathan Bond was in active life as a business man and public spirited citizen for more than fifty years. He gave liberally of his means and influence to works of public improvement and I remember that he was one of the early subscribers to and promoters of the old White Water Valley canal. He subscribed a thousand dollars to the railroad from Richmond to Logansport, which was a large sum for that time. Although he was in business more than fifty years and dealt with all sorts of people, so great was his probity and his wish to avoid contentions, that he never sued a man, and, in turn, was never sued during all his long career. This good and true man died on the 22nd of November, 1888, in the old home where he had lived so long and happily. On the 25th of that month, his remains were laid to rest in the Fairfield burying ground, south of Washington, in the present of a large concourse of people, neighbors, friends and relatives, but who knew him but to love his peaceful, earnest ways and respect his purity of character and honesty of purpose. His venerable wife, Tamar Bond, survives him and still knows the love and tenderness of devoted friends. Such lives as theirs have been, are worthy of far more than a passing notice. The best lives are those that are not only noble and true but that are lived in accord with the needs of their time and the nature of their surroundings. Their lives were suited to the early struggle and trials of pioneer life. They lived to help advance the civilization of the new land. While they greatly helped forward its material growth, they aided also, that more noble and permanent advance that alone makes a country, a State or a neighborhood truly prosperous and happy, the advance of character, moral and intelligence. No better, truer or more honorable epitaph could be written than this, "They lived together lovingly and did faithfully the work of pioneers of enterprise, morality and intelligent christianity in the new state.
