Jesse's mother was Mary Ellen T(almadge) Askren and his father was John Askren. John Askren had a sister, Mary Jane Askren born in 1833, who married Thomas O. Talmadge, who was born in 1829 in Kentucky. In 1850, Thomas lived in Monroe, Madison County, Indiana and that is all I know about Thomas and Mary Jane. John Askren’s first wife was Mary Ellen Talmadge, the sister of Thomas Talmadge, whom he married June 3, 1849. Mary Ellen Talmadge, his first wife, died either in Wabash or Grant County between 1862 to 1867. I could not find her grave, or date of death, even with the help of a find a grave volunteer. These are the children of John and Mary Ellen Talmadge Askren Mary Jane Askren 1850– Martha M Askren 1852– Alonzo M. Askren 1854– ? Rebecca Askren 1854–1918 Elizabeth R. Askren 1853–1921 per death certificate. She was widowed Hester C. Askren 1857– John C. Askren 1859– Jesse Franklin Askren 1862–1937 – Jesse is listed later on in the 1880 census. Jesse Askren Fatally Hurt - Injuries Received When Hit By Auto Resulted in Death At Hospital; Skull is Fractured. Jesse Askren, Sr, 75 years of age and a resident of Tipton, Indiana for the past 30 years, died at the Mercy Hospital in Elwood, Indiana Sunday evening, October 17, 1937, shortly before 7:00 o’clock, death being caused by injuries received Saturday evening the 16th, about 4:00 o’clock, when he was struck by an automobile driven by Floyd Rivers of Columbia Avenue. According to eye witnesses, the unfortunate man had left his home at 603 East Jefferson Street and was going across the street to the N. I. Boldon Grocery, with several milk bottles in his hand, and walked directly in the path of a roadster driven by Rivers. He was knocked to the street and persons, who ran to his assistance, saw he was badly hurt as blood was oozing from both ears. The injured man was removed to the office of a local physician where he was given first aid then taken to the Mercy Hospital at Elwood. Death was caused by a fractured skull. He died without regaining consciousness. According to witnesses, Rivers was driving at a moderate rate of speed and stopped almost instantly after his auto struck the man. Chief of Police Richardson, who investigated the accident seemed to think Rivers was blameless. The body of the unfortunate man was brought to the Young Funeral Home on West Jefferson Street for preparation to await funeral services which have not been fully completed. Jesse Askren was one of the well-known men of this city and had been employed in various lines of work after coming here from Madison County, Indiana. He was a carpenter and had been employed on many buildings in this city and in the county and also did home and barn painting. For some time, he was employed by the late J. N. Russell at the ice plant in Tipton. Jesse was the son of John W. Askren and Mary Ellen Talmadge Askren. Mr. Askren was born in Grant County July 27, 1862, and married at Summitville to Miss Harriet Alvanettie Nichols of that place, and the widow and several children survive. The children are: Mrs. Mae Mitchell, wife of John Mitchell, residing west of Tipton; Mrs. Pearl Ebert, wife of Harry Ebert; Charles Askren, Manly Askren, Herman Askren, and Miss Mabel Askren, all of Tipton, and Jesse Askren, Jr. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren. Jesse Askren Services - Funeral of Crash Victim Held Wednesday Morning Funeral services for Jesse Askren, totally hurt in an automobile accident on East Jefferson Street Sunday evening, October 17, 1937, were held at the Young Funeral Home on West Jefferson Street Wednesday morning at 10:00 o’clock. Jesse was born July 27, 1862. Many relatives and friends were in attendance at the services and there were many beautiful floral offerings.
