Description	:	Jesse Lee Atkins was the second son of James Smith Atkins and Elizabeth Windham Atkins. He was named after his grandfather who is buried in Brearley Cemetery in Yell Co., AR. Jesse was born in Yell Co., AR, but he married Martha Melvina "Babe" Poteet in neighboring Perry Co., AR, on 28 Aug 1879. Daughter Letty and son James Ethie Atkins (Sr.) were born before Jesse died in 1890, five months short of his 34th birthday. Jesse was born in Yell Co., AR, but he married Martha Melvina "Babe" Poteet in neighboring Perry Co., AR, on 28 Aug 1879. Daughter Letty and son James Ethie Atkins (Sr.) were born before Jesse died in 1890, five months short of his 34th birthday. He was buried beside his parents in the family cemetery on the Atkins farm. "Babe" never remarried. She moved to Little Rock, AR, where her husband's sister Molly and husband Tate Toors were living. They helped "Babe" set up a boarding house in order to support herself and children. Not only did "Babe" lose her husband at an early age, but their son James Ethie Atkins died of influenza in 1918 and his wife Laura Gertrude Quinn Atkins, died of cancer six months later in 1919, leaving three young grandchildren for "Babe" and her widowed daughter Letty Atkins Koen to raise. "Babe" returned many times to Yell and Perry County to visit her family and the Atkins family of her husband. Her grandson James Ethie Atkins, Jr. fondly recalled summer visits to see his Uncle James Irvin Atkins and wife Millie McConnell Atkins. When "Babe" died at the age of 99 in 1958, she was not returned to Yell County to be buried beside her husband. Her daughter Letty buried her in Roselawn Cemetery, Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR.
