Bowen. Terribly Mangled in Logging Train Accident. Body Will Be Brought to Chico Tomorrow Morning for Interment. The Red Bluff Sentinel gives the following particulars of the tragic death of J.L. Bowen, who is well known in this city: Another frightful accident happened at Lyonsville Monday afternoon and the crushed and mangled remains of J.L. Bowen occupy a slab at Fickert’s Undertaking Parlors, while Elmer Spencer was fatally scalded and George Bundy has a broken nose. A train with cars loaded with logs went through a trestle. The rear car upon which was brakeman Bowen, went through first and he was terribly crushed and mangled. The remaining two cars and the engine were pulled off the trestle and Fireman Spencer was so badly scalded that it is not believed that he can recover. Engineer Bundy escaped with a broken nose and other bruises but is not dangerously hurt. The remains of the unfortunate young man were brought from Lyonsville last night by R.H. Blunkall, arriving here at 7 o’clock this morning. The body was terribly crushed and was prepared for shipment to Chico, where he will be buried by the side of his wife, who died nearly two years ago when her baby was born. Deceased was born April 13, 1873, in Lake county. He was married two years ago last February to Miss Nina Blunkall. A little daughter survive them, and deceased also had two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Van Landingham of Elk Creek and Mrs. Lillie Welch, of Rocklin. The funeral will take place in Chico on Thursday or Friday upon the arrival of relatives.
