He was born Sept. 8, 1892 in Mahaska County, the son of Aaron and Mary Flanders Mattix. He lived in Mahaska County a11 his life and worked for the County several years. Mattix passed away Feb. 8 at his home near Oskaloosa on Route 1 at the age of 74 years. He was born Sept. 8, 1892 in Mahaska County, the son of Aaron and Mary Flanders Mattix. He lived in Mahaska County a11 his life and worked for the County several years. He was engaged in the oil business in Oskaloosa for some time. Mr. Mattix was an active member of the Mahaska County Historical Society serving as president in 1958. J.C. Mattix, his brother, Fred, along with many others from southern Iowa and Missouri were all members of the Fife and Drum Corps which entertained visitors at the Old Settlers and threshers reunion for 15 years. The Mattix brothers, Joe Fuller and Frank Bonar, the latter 2 of New London, Iowa were the original four in the corp when it was organized in 1950 at Mount Pleasant. Surviving Jesse are his wife, Velma, one daughter, Mrs. Tony (Nellie) Van Helten of Eddyville, one son. Harold of Oskaloosa; 12 grandchildren, 18 Great grandchildren; two brothers, Charles of Fremont, Iowa, and Fred of Rural Oskaloosa. Funeral services were held saturday, Feb. 11 in the Garland Chapel with Rev, Max Johnson in charge. Burial was in Coal Creek cemetery, The Jesse Mattix family lived in Coal Creek community for many years and we feel we have lost a good friend and former neighbor.
