MATTIX Mary Louise Flanders, daughter of Joseph Dean and Mary Etta Flanders, was born in Mahaska county, Iowa, July 27, 1860. She died at her home, Dec. 9, 1939, age 79 years, 4 months and 12 days. She had been in failing health for some time, but was confined to her bed just a short before her death. When she was 9 years of age she moved with her parents to a farm east of Hamilton in Marion county. There she grew to womanhood, losing her mother when she was 13 She was married Jan. 9, 1884, to Aaron W. Mattix, and to this union was born five children: Nellie Batey died in 1904, Roy died in infancy, three sons who remain are Charlie, Fred and Jesse, all of Beacon. Mrs. Mattix was converted and became a member of the Hamilton Methodist church when but a child. In 1892 she moved with her husband to the farm, which ever since has been her home and in her home was organized the first United Brethren class and revival meeting held in the Union school house the need for a church became apparent, which resulted in the building of Coal Creek church with Mrs. Mattix as one of the charter members of the United Brethren class. One of the red letter days of her life was Jan. 9, 1934, when with her husband and family, celebrated their golden wedding. Those left to mourn are, the husband and three sons, one sister, Mrs. Etta Amber, 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and a large circle of nephews and nieces and other relatives and a host or friends. Funeral services were held on Dec. 12, at the Coal Creek church conducted by the Rev. C.S. Gowin of Lundgren, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Hulbert. Burial was made in the Coal Creek cemetery.
