Herald) The entire community was saddened to learn of the death of Miss Jessie MacFarlane, matron of the Mark H. Wentworth Home, which occurred on Sunday morning, August 6th, She had been matron at the Home for over 25 years and was devoted to the institution and also to the residents of the Home. She took a personal interest in everyone there, and made them feel at home. No person could be closer than she had been to many patients who have resided there during her long service. She trained at Portsmouth Hospital to become a nurse, graduating in one of the first classed of the training school. She did private nursing for some time, and in 1913 became matron of the Wentworth Home, succeeding Miss Vera Morgan, who was first matron. Words are inadequate to do justice in expressing the depth of sorrow felt at the loss of one who has meant so much to the community, for not only did Miss MacFarlane give outstanding service for so many years as superintendent of the Wentworth Home, but her entire life was devoted to aiding the sick and suffering. The closing of such a career has saddened many who knew of her deeds of mercy and love, but she had left behind a train of memories which those who knew her best will tenderly cherish. She was a rare character, a beautiful type of womanhood, full of courage and love for others; Always self-effacing and never too tired to sit up with the sick or hold the hand of the patient who was passing on. Her radiant smile lighted up her face as she entered the sick room and brought comfort and cheer to those who needed it. Bearing the burdens of others she was like a ministering angel, going about doing good throughout her life, and having the respect and love of the entire community, A source of strength and cheer to all about her, she leaves her friends and associates the better for having known her. Miss MacFarlane was a native of Ramsay, Ont, a daughter of the late David S. MacFarlane and his wife Jane Aikenhead. She came to this city 47 years ago, and although she was ever loyal to her home town, was proud of her adopted city and its accomplishments. She is survived by one sister, Miss Margaret MacFarlane, and three brothers, Matthew, R., William and Jas C. MacFarlane, all of Canada. Services were held on Tuesday afternoon at North Congregational Church, Portsmouth.
