Jewell Leonard was born in Cherokee on Dec. 19, 1945, to Dwight and Charlotte Leonard. She grew up in the Dogtown Hill neighborhood with her six brothers and sisters, cousins and friends. Jewell was the fourth of seven kids, so she knew what it meant to share. She learned early on that it wasn't worth it to fight, so she was often the one to walk away from childhood conflicts. This ability to turn the other cheek led her to be a pretty easy- going person throughout her life and kept her sane regardless of what chaos might surround her. Jewell eventually left Cherokee and moved around a bit before she settled in Urbandale and took a job at The Machine Shed restaurant, where she worked for the last 22 years. Jewell was beloved by her co-workers and customers at the Shed, and was known for her genuine smile, excellent customer service and her no-nonsense advice for life. Jewell always took time to talk to her customers, get to know them and even their families. Nobody ever felt 'less than' or left out with Jewell. She always made everyone feel included and remembered. Her co-workers all called her "Mama," and asked her advice on life, love and health. Much like her Mother and Grandma Krout, she knew all the good home remedies and cures to fix what ailed you! Aside from helping others, her hobbies included reading, playing bingo, lottery tickets, bargain shopping and occasional trips to Prairie Meadows. Jewell will be remembered for her easy - going attitude, generous nature and her tremendous work ethic. Nobody went without if Jewell was around. She gave and gave to those around her with absolutely no expectation of repayment. If your kids needed shoes, they had them. If you couldn't pay a bill, she paid it. If you were in her world, you had what you needed, or she didn't sleep until you did. Jewell was preceded in death by her husband Robert Park; both parents; a sister, Pamela (Tee Dee) Turner; a brother, Timothy Leonard; and a nephew, Jon Pearl. Jewell leaves behind three kids and four grandchildren: Tim and his wife, Jen, Scott of Oskaloosa; Heidi Scott and her children, Taya and Tony, of Denver; Wendy Scott and her children, Devonte and Dominic, of Cherokee. She is also survived by sisters Sherryl (Vernon) Cunningham and Becky Leonard,both of Cherokee; Taffee Henderson, Denver; and one brother, Stephen Leonard, Anamosa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
