Read More	SCHELKOPF, JOAN CLARA—Joan Clara (Pittard) Schelkopf was born to John Adam Pittard and Rouene Winnifred (Ritchey) Pittard on Dec. 23, 1936, in the same house of the Geneva township in which her father was born in 1905. She passed away on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Fillmore County Hospital at the age of 65. Joan attended School District No. 81 from the first through seventh grades. She entered Geneva Public School District No. 75 in the eighth grade, and graduated with the Class of 1954. During high school, she enjoyed her friends, cheerleading, and being involved in vocal and instrumental music. It was very evident at an early age that Joan genuinely exuded kindness, energy and enthusiasm to all those surrounding her. Being outside and observing all things of nature interested her greatly. She enjoyed doing chores and helping her dad work with the animals. After she was old enough to drive a tractor, she spent many hours helping with the fieldwork. In the summer months, her free time was spent at the city swimming pool with her friends. Saturday nights were always roller-skating night at “Ye Ol’ Corral” Skating Rink in Geneva. In 1954, after returning from a summer visit with her Aunt Evelyn Neubaum in California, Joan went to work as a bookkeeper for Schelkopf Plumbing and Heating. That fall, she attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On March 6, 1955, Joan was married to Joseph Edgar Schelkopf at the Geneva United Methodist Church. In 1959, they moved to their current home on J Street. This union was gifted with four children: Jan Renee’ (Schelkopf) Treadway, John Joseph, Dr. Julie Ann Schelkopf and Jennifer Jo (Schelkopf) Stengel. Joan continued being the bookkeeper for Schelkopf Engineering until Joe sold the business to their son, John, in 1997. She was also a substitute secretary for the principals at both the Geneva Elementary and High Schools for over 20 years. A member of the Geneva United Methodist church her entire life, Joan enjoyed serving on many church committees. Her last position was that of lay delegate to the Annual Conference. She cherished her church family, and many of Joe and Joan’s closest friendships began at church. Joan’s greatest joy was her family. She was devoted to being a wonderful daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. Her strength was in raising her family on unconditional love and strong family values. This love and strength transferred into her great devotion and pride of her eight grandchildren. She set a special example for others through her moral, spiritual, loving and kind attitudes towards all. A genuine example of this was shown in her caring and loving attitude as she took care of her mother, Rouene, over the past four years, until she passed away last April. She loved having everyone gather at their home for birthdays, holidays, and any other reason to spend time together. No one ever went hungry or left without a hug at Joan’s (Grandma’s) house. The absence of her smiles, waves, cooking, rocking, playing, hugs and kisses will leave a huge void in the lives of her family and friends, but her example will be with us always. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rouene Pittard. She is survived by her husband, Joe; daughter, Jan Treadway and husband, Tom; son, John and wife Doreen; daughter, Julie Schelkopf, daughter, Jennifer Stengel and husband, Kris; grandchildren, Eric, Matthew and Daniel Treadway; Shelby, Sydney and Jacquelyn Schelkopf; Kristian and Eli Stengel; brother, Roger Lee Pittard and wife, Mary; three nieces, seven nephews and all of their children and spouses. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church on Monday, Dec. 23, with Rev. Pat Kelley and Rev. Brian Kottas officiating. Organist and pianist was Michael Zeleny with vocal solos by Kim Tomjack. Music included “People Need the Lord” “When the Time Comes” “What We Believe In”, and “We Shall Behold Him.” Casket bearers were Ross Ridenour, Larry Westerbuhr, Don R. Miller, Kenneth Gibson, Clark “Woody” Woodruff and Tim Fairbanks. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal January 1st, 2003 page 7.
