Description	:	Joan Maydelle NELSON 78 yrs old (February 26, 1943- July 9, 2021 ) was the third of four children ( Chester Ervin Jr., Harlan Dwight, Joan Maydelle, and Marjorie Kaye.) born to Chester Ervin Nelson and Amy Ekstrom. Read More	Joan Maydelle NELSON 78 yrs old (February 26, 1943- July 9, 2021 ) was the third of four children ( Chester Ervin Jr., Harlan Dwight, Joan Maydelle, and Marjorie Kaye.) born to Chester Ervin Nelson and Amy Ekstrom. She grew up on her parent's farm in Kandiyohi Township, Burk County, North Dakota. The family attended the Niobe Baptist Church in her early years. Joan graduated from Kenmare High School and attended the University of North Dakota where she graduated with a BS in Mathematics and later earned her MS degree in Mathematics from Utah State University, Logan, UT, while her husband earned his doctorate. Joan married Donald Arthur HAMMER (76 yrs old) b. September 17, 1942 d. Jan 3, 2019, of Wildrose, Williams County, North Dakota on June 5, 1965 in Kenmare, North Dakota. Donald was the son of Arthur Hammer and Ila Alg Hammer Peterson. They first lived in Orono, Maine where Don taught at the University of Maine. Later they purchased a home in Norris, Anderson County, Tennessee where Donald was Senior Wetlands Ecologist for the Tennessee Valley Authority and Joan was a Mathematics Teacher. Joan was very fond of living in Norris, TN. Joan and Don had three homes: Summers were spent in a home outside of Bottineau, ND. A few weeks were spent in the spring and fall in their Norris, TN home and winters were spent in Sulphur Springs Valley (beginning in 1996) near Wilcox, AZ where they purchased a ranch home complete with a bunk house in Cochise County, Arizona due to it being a better climate for her husband's allergies. They had pecan trees, wide open spaces and views of Chiricahua Mountains and Dos Cabezas Mountains as well as the close by access to the Willcox Playa Wildlife Area where husband, Don, gave annual wildlife tours to the many tourists who flocked to the area. After Don's death in 2019, Joan sold their homes outside of Bottineau, ND and Norris, TN and due to the COVID pandemic (2019-2021) she spent full time at the ranch outside of Wilcox, AZ. Joan's interests included the Willcox Cowbelles where she was the Director and editor of the newsletter which was a non-profit organization providing scholarships, and student financial aid service in Willcox. Joan was also the Complier of two family history books: The Nelson Family and the Carlson Family. Joan was an active member of the Nelson / Carlson /Hennix and Schmelling Reunions. She will be remembered for her unselfish hours of dedication serving others and missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Chester Ervin Nelson, Jr. of Bismarck, ND. She is survived by her brother Harlan Dwight Nelson of Phoenix, Arizona and Kenmare, ND and sister Marjorie Kaye Nelson and two nieces, Jennifer Amy Dauner of Moorhead, MN and Brenda Wirtz (David) Anderson, Dilworth, MN Her ashes are buried by her husband at the Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare, ND. Cause of death: Unknown.
