Last Wednesday afternoon Job Short, one of the earliest settlers of Cloud County, answered the summons of death. His end unexpectedly, but peacefully. During the forenoon Mr. S. greeted a number of friends along Main street while taking his daily walk and seemed in the best of health. In the afternoon he sat on the shady veranda of the family residence on Seventh and Washington streets; complaining of feeling tired he passed into his apartment and lying down on a sofa asked for a glass of water. His grand-daughter started to comply with his request, but he stopped her, exclaiming, "you need not mind," and as the words left his lips his form straightened out, the face became palid and he was dead. Mr. Short has lived in Cloud county for twenty-one years and in his old days no man ever lived a more worthy or respected life. The funeral obsequies were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, by Rev. Stauber, the cortege accompanying the remains to Pleasant Hill being very large. Job Short was born in Essex county, Delaware, in 1812. In 1830 he was married to Miss Nancy Benson, who died in this city November 1887. The deceased was always a pioneer, making his home in the wilds in advance of civilization. In 1839 he traveled by flat boat to Indiana where he lived until '69, when he came to the sunflower state, settling in this county when it was known to most of the world as a desert. Here he lived amid friends and comfort until death. He was a member of the Christian church. He was the father of nine children, eight of whom are now living; seven being present at the funeral; among his descendants are 38 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. A number of his sons and daughters are highly esteemed residents of Concordia, and to them the DAYLIGHT extends its sympathy. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield) July 2020
