Mr. Benes was born on Jan. 9, 1914, in rural Howells to Joe and Antonia (Vach) Benes Sr. He attended a rural school near his home. He entered the U.S. Army on April 28, 1942. He was stationed in the United States for two years before being sent overseas to the European Theater of Operations where he served for 14 months. He served with the 8th Armored Division and drove a medium size tank. He earned the rank of sergeant and he also served as a Czechoslovakian interpreter for the Army. He returned to the U.S. on Jan. 5, 1946. When he came back he farmed and did other jobs. He married Lilly Brunken Hellwig on Feb. 23, 1949, in Columbus. They farmed for more than 40 years in the Creston area before retiring to Clarkson in February 1987. He enjoyed hunting, reading, gardening, wine making, cutting trees and telling stories. Survivors are his wife of Schuyler; one daughter, Julia (Ralph) Burger of Leigh; one brother, Ed of Dodge; four sisters, Helen Kriz of Snyder, Adella Birchen of West Point, Lillian Musil and Blanche Hake, both of Leigh; five grandchildren; six great-grandsons.
