Description	:	Joe C. McMillen of rural Chanute passed away March 23, 2013. Joe resided 87 years on Village Creek where he enjoyed the ever changing seasons. Joe had many good memories and stories of the area. Joe operated his farm and cow calf operation for 82 years. He was a farmer that embraced change and innovation. He was constantly improving his farm. In 1989 he was awarded the Soil Conservation Award. His favorite job on the farm was combining. At the age of 87 he still enjoyed keeping records of the farm and driving around to watch the progress of the crops. Joe... Read More	Joe C. McMillen of rural Chanute passed away March 23, 2013. Joe resided 87 years on Village Creek where he enjoyed the ever changing seasons. Joe had many good memories and stories of the area. Joe operated his farm and cow calf operation for 82 years. He was a farmer that embraced change and innovation. He was constantly improving his farm. In 1989 he was awarded the Soil Conservation Award. His favorite job on the farm was combining. At the age of 87 he still enjoyed keeping records of the farm and driving around to watch the progress of the crops. Joe is survived by his wife Doris. They enjoyed 59 years of marriage on the farm that had been owned by each of their ancestors. Joe is also survived by his daughter Marsha Carter and her husband Bill, grandchildren Marcee Binder and husband Zach, Ryan Carter and wife Amy and great-granddaughters Rainey and Rylan; brother Wilbur and many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Ada and Noah, his sister Pauline and brothers Gale,Sam,Max,Forrest and Gene. Joe's family was such a delight to him. He loved being in the middle of all the fun. He loved to travel across the country to visit his daughter and family at their various Naval Stations. He also loved playing the piano, playing Scrabble, sledding in the snow, ice skating and reading. He adored his great-granddaughters, and always greeted them with "there are my sunshines". Joe was a member of the Zion Methodist Church until its closing in 1970. He then became a member of First United Methodist Church of Chanute. He loved singing hymns and when he was unable to attend church he either listened to the service on the radio or watched a service on TV. Memorials in his name may be made to the First United Methodist Church's Awana Program or Neosho County 4-H.
