The first permanent settler in the area was , 1769-1845 [sic] and his wife Rachel, 1768-1842, who arrived in 1801. The Browns were accompanied by his sister, Mary (Brown) Pusey, a widow with a large family. The Browns from Culpepper [sic] Co., Virginia, built ther cabin on the brow of a hill, on the north bank... The Browns from Culpepper [sic] Co., Virginia, built ther cabin on the brow of a hill, on the north bank of Rocky Fork. Joel Brown spent a lot of time improving his land, he planted an extensive apple orchard and produced some of the first cider in the county. He ws an excellent hunter who shot a deer on the courthouse square in February, 1808. He hung it on a beech tree that stood on the northeast corner of the square, so those who needed meat cout partake of it. The weather was so cold that year that most of the small animals were frozen and only a few of the larger ones rarely ventured out. "Joshua, son of Joel Brown, married Jeanetta, daughter of Rev. Daniel Inskeep. They were the parents of a large family including Jennie (Mrs. George Barrere, Jr.), James, 1842-1913, who served in the Civil War, William E., also a volunteer in the Union Army, Sallie (Mrs. W.T. Roush), Mary, 1849-1931, Joel H., member of the 168th Reg., Susan (Mrs. Marion Britton), John C., and the eldest daughter, Rachel, 1837-1885, who became the wife of Jonah Britton. "Rachel, sister of Joel Brown, Sr., married Rev. Daniel Inskeep. He was a Methodist minister, born in 17773, who survived until 1853. The inskeeps settled on Ellitcott Survey No. 2,480, about 1804. They were pioneers of many talents."
