Description	:	According to family legend, Joel at about age 15 "ran away from home to fight in the Mexican War, but his parents came and got him." He did however fight all throughout the Civil War, suffering only a non-combat injury. On the 31st day of August 1864 while carrying a box of cartridges containing 1,000 rounds in front of Atlanta, Georgia, in jumping across a ditch, the bank on the opposite side gave way, causing me to fall backward, bringing the box of cartridges violently upon my abdomen, causing a rupture...I re-enlisted January 1, 1864 in Co. I, 9th Iowa Vol. Infantry, and was discharged July 18th, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. "I claim a pension on account of rupture...I have resided at Castalia, Iowa and my occupation has been farming before my entry into the Service. I was of good sound physical health, being at enrollment a Farmer, and I am now partially disabled from obtaining my subsistence by manual labor by reason of my disabilities." He married Serelda Gray after the war. In the 1870s they moved to Kansas to farm, an unhappy time when the growing family was menaced by Indians, grasshoppers, drought and eventual foreclosure. Around 1890 they moved to Vancouver where Joel, still trying to get his pension, built a log cabin in which the family lived until he died. His 1896 obituary in the Vancouver Independent said of him, "When he came out of the war, constant hardship and exposure had made severe inroads on his health, terminating in gangrene from which he never recovered. For the last 30 years he has led a Christian life and was a member of the United Brethren Church. No man in this vicinity was more respected or honored than he. He was a good father, a good husband, a good neighbor, and exemplary in all the walks of life and for business integrity none surpassed him. He died in great peace." He probably actually died in great pain, as a toe injury had become gangrenous and his lower extremity was being amputated bit by bit as the gangrene worsened. After his death though, the government started paying a pension to Serelda Jane as a Civil War vet's widow. She lived for another 20 years, so maybe in that regard he finally got just compensation for his service.
