Description	:	Serelda Jane was born in the middle of winter shortly after the family had moved to Rock County, Wisconsin, from Ohio. Although she told people she was born in Janesville, other records say the family was living in Cadiz in Greene County. Living with them was Serelda Jane's paternal grandmother, Rachel Gray. Around 1860 the family moved west to Winnashiek County, Iowa. There she met Joel Elliott, but in September 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army. Read More	Serelda Jane was born in the middle of winter shortly after the family had moved to Rock County, Wisconsin, from Ohio. Although she told people she was born in Janesville, other records say the family was living in Cadiz in Greene County. Living with them was Serelda Jane's paternal grandmother, Rachel Gray. Around 1860 the family moved west to Winnashiek County, Iowa. There she met Joel Elliott, but in September 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army. Somehow though he lived through the entire Civil War, and they were married in August 1865 and began having children, three of whom died young. Four survived infancy. The 1870 census has the family living in Jasper County, Iowa. Then sometime before September of 1876 the family moved to a farm east of Woodston, Kansas, where they had a terrible time with drought and grasshoppers. In August of 1880 another son was born and was named after his dad, but he only lived three months. There is a story that a child or children in the family "died from exposure in a blizzard when the family was moving," and maybe that's what happened to little Joel. By 1886 the family was farming in Alton, Kansas, and "nearly starved to death." Daughter Mary married Lewis Phelps and moved out west where he was working on the Cascade Locks on the Columbia River. Around 1889 the Kansas farm was lost to foreclosure and the family left with "what they could carry," following Mary out west to Clark County, Washington, where Joel built a cabin and farmed. After Joel died in 1896, Serelda and son Roy moved to East Mill Plain, now part of Vancouver, Washington. She received a small Civil War pension. After Roy married in 1914, Serelda went to live with her daughter Mary Phelps, and it was there that she died. She was a member of the United Brethren Church. She had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two of whom served in the Washington State legislature. At least five became Methodist missionaries, and even more were Methodist ministers.
