They were all good soldiers in the war, did their duty there and are doing the same now, in time of peace." - page of 257 A History of Marion County DILLON - The news of the death of Mr. Joel I. Harrelson which occurred at 2 o'clock Monday morning was received here with profound sorrow. Mr. Harrelson was one of the most prominent citizens of the Gaddy section and will be greatly missed. The deceased served with distinction in the war between the states, being a member of Company E. Gregg's First Regiment SC Volunteers. He was a soldier of magnificent courage and received promotion for his many acts of bravery. For many months Mr. Harrelson had been in failing health, but being a man of such robust constitution his friends entertained the hope that he would ultimately recover from the malady from which he was suffering. He bore his illness with great fortitude, however, and when it was seen that the end was near he died as he had lived - with his face toward God. The funeral was held at Piney Grove Tuesday morning, and the body was interred with Masonic honors. Mr. F. D. Bryant who delivered the eulogy paying many beautiful tributes to the deceased. Mr. Harrelson leaves a wife and a large number of children to mourn his loss. Published in the Dillon Herald, January 11, 1906 Transcribed by John Humphrey from microfilm at the Dillon Library Shared by Helen Belden Moody - Helen's Little Corner Note: According to probate records, Joel had four children living from his first marriage to Loubedia Scott: Annie Harrelson Stevens, John Calhoun Harrelson, Ella Harrelson Horne and Luther Harrelson. Loubedia died between the taking of the 1880 census and his second marriage in 1883. Joel married Bathonia Ayres on April 8, 1883. Their seven children were: Frank L. Harrelson, Isla Augusta Harrelson, Joel Ernest Harrelson, Clausen Pervis Harrelson, Neva Bernice Harrelson, Leon Bryan Harrelson and Lacy Hoyt Harrelson.
