The following is a description of the various duties of such employment in its time. "The "Donkeyman" is the crew member whose job is to deal with the operation and maintenance of any and all assorted machinery other than the ship's main engines, while other information says his duties would include assisting with the main engines. A Shore Donkey Man would operate a donkey engine employed at a dock or wharf. While at sea donkey engines could be used to operate the anchor windlass(winch) and bilge pumps. He would also be called on to perform the duties of Fireman or Greaser. It was not unusual for a Donkeyman to do watch duties. On some ships the "Donkey engine/boiler" could be used to supply emergency propulsion. Running steam engines was a dangerous job and that is where real knowledge and skills was of real importance. His duties would include operating the small steam-engines, usually for subsidiary operations on board ship, as feeding the boilers of the propelling engines. He would be considered a "jack of all trades" aboard ship.
