Paetznick for forty years one of Groton's leading business men, died last Wednesday evening from chronic myocarditis, after suffering from the malady for the past five weeks. Mr. Paetznick had not been in the best of health for several years prior to his death, in 1923 retiring and relinquishing the active management of the store to his son, Alfred. Although Mr. Paetznick, through habit formed by his close attention to business for thirty-five or more years, was frequently seen about the place, yet he relied upon his son to a more or less extent, for the active management of the concern. For the past year or more, his absence grew more and more frequent as he remained at home with his devoted wife. The deceased was born in Germany in 1859 and had the unique distinction of having served in the German army under three different German emperors. He was in the cavalry branch of the service. His induction into the German army was under the grand-father of the present ex-kaiser, William the First, who died shortly after he entered the army. His son, Frederick, who assumed the throne, lived for one year, when he, too, died of cancer of the mouth. Kaiser Wilhelm succeeded him, and Mr. Paetznick served under him until he was placed on the reserve list shortly before he came to this country. Groton acquired a keen business man and good citizen because of the rigid discipline maintained in the German army. Shortly after his discharge, he feared that he might be called back to the colors for some reason or another and immigrated to this country. He came direct to Groton from Germany, landing here in 1885 and for a time followed the cabinet maker's trade and worked on farms in the vicinity of Groton. Later he became identified with the Wolfe furniture business and was connected with this institution for three or four years, finally branching out for himself and established a business that up to now has been through forty-four years of prosperity and adversity alike, growing and expanding as the town and surrounding community warranted. He also served two terms on the city council. In 1888 he was married to Miss Marie Fiel, of Germany, and to this union eight children were born, one of whom died in infancy. Those left to survive him are: His wife and the following children: Mrs. John Seefeld, Mobridge; Oscar Paetznick, Groton; Mrs. Howard Falknor, Groton; Carl Paetznick, Mobridge; Henry Paetznick, Groton; Alfred Paetznick, Groton and Marguerite Paetznick, Tacoma, Wash. There are also one brother and one sister - Julius Paetznick of Herkimer, N. Y., and Mrs. Franz Beulow, of Jefferson, Wis. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the family home conducted by Rev. F. E. Wilke, pastor of St. John's Lutheran church, and in charge of the Wilson undertaking establishment of Aberdeen. The remains were laid to rest in Groton cemetery.
