Paetznick, 90, Aberdeen, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998 at the Bethesda Home in Aberdeen. The funeral was Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Paetznick Garness Funeral Chapel with Msgr. Marvin McPhee officiating. Burial was in the Groton Union Cemetery. Marquerite Erna Paetznick was born August 30, 1907 at Groton. Her parents were Helmuth and Mary (Feil) Paetznick. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Groton. She attended Groton school and graduated in 1925. She attended the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks and received a two-year nursing degree. She transferred to the University of Minnesota because that school had just started a baccalaureate nursing program. She graduated from the U of M in 1931 and took her first job at Tacoma General Hospital in the state of Washington. She returned to school and received her master's degree from the University of Washington at Seattle. Her next job was as a supervisor of obstetric nursing at a hospital in New Orleans. After several years there she accepted a job at Miller Hospital in Minneapolis and also taught in the school of nursing at the University of Minnesota. In 1949 she moved to Denver and was the director of nursing service at Denver General Hospital. She was chosen by the World Health Organization to inspect hospitals and health units throughout the world to help them improve nursing and medical care. While in this capacity she took training in Switzerland and then was sent to such countries as Egypt, Iran, Greece, and other countries under the auspice of the United Nations. In 1960 she moved to Illinois to become the director of nursing service at Lutheran General Hospital located in Park Ridge. She worked there until her retirement in 1972 when she moved to Georgetown, Colo. During her retirement she was active as a volunteer at the Georgetown Public Library and in many civic activities. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Georgetown. She came to Aberdeen in 1990 and made her home at Parkside Apartments until failing health forced her to move to the Bethesda Home in 1994. She is survived by one nephew, Gerald Paetznick, Austin, Texas, and four nieces, Sandra Odland, Aberdeen; Myrna Pulfrey, Seattle; Elizabeth Mayfield, Las Cruses, N.M.; and Sheila Garness, Groton. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters. Marie Sternhagen was the organist and the Rev. Bill Duncan was the soloist.
