Description	:	Johann (John P.) Goerz was born on August 22, 1826, in Obergruppe, Prussia. (Poland). In approximately 1857, when Johann was 30, he married Katherine Neufeld. She had been born in Waldheim, Russia, and was either 14 or 18 years old when they married. Johann and Katherine lived in the lowlands (Netherlands) of Russia. Johann and Katherine lived in the lowlands (Netherlands) of Russia. It is said that he became interested in America because of its religious liberty. In 1874, the family of eight left from Southern Russia (Karrassan) to travel to America. Katherine became ill and died aboard the S.S.Silesia. She was buried at sea on July 3, 1874, at the age of either 31 or 35 years. The ship arrived in New York on July 8, 1874. A heartbroken Johann boarded a train in New York City with his six children and traveled hundreds of miles to the west, to Yankton, a small town in the Dakota Territory. From there, they took a wagon pulled by oxen for about forty miles to the north, and built a sod house on the prairie. During the first winter, their hay roof caught fire, and the family ran barefoot through the blizzard to a neighbor's house, where they stayed until spring. Johann married Catharina (aka Katherine Weiss Tieszen; widow of Frank) on May 11, 1875 in South Dakota. She had been born in Russia in 1843, and it was said that she had a large tumor on her face. They settled in the Dakota Territory, Turner County, Marion township. She was a midwife. They had five more children together. Sometime after arriving in America, Johann P. Goerz changed the spelling of his name to John P. Goertz. Katherine Weiss Tieszen Goertz died at age 70 in Turner County, SD. John moved to Montana in his later years to be near his daughter Agganeta ("Nettie", born to John and his second wife). He died there on September 1, 1913, and is thought to be buried in the Bethlehem Mennonite Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Montana. The tombstone says "Diedrich" instead of "John". He was 87 years old. In a contact with the Office of Vital Statistics in Helena MT, it was learned that there was no record of a death certificate for John Goertz between the years 1860 and 1916, so there is no actual proof of where he died and was buried. In the book, "Tale of Three Cities", page 929, Lyla Roth Green, in writing about the Charles and Olga Graber family, stated that "Grandpa (John P.) Goertz is buried in the Bethlehem Mennonite Church Cemetery." This is most likely the truth, however the church records at that site have no record of his death and burial there.
